ok so somebody near me is selling an msi gtx 970 which is the same as mine, now im not sure weather to buy this or sell mine and use the money to get a 1080 or 1070.
its mainly going to be used to vr and looking around not many games support sli in vr right now but id assume that will change in the future.
so do i go sli for relativly cheap? or upgrade to something thats going to last me another 4 years or so?
what would you do

forgot to add the 2nd 970 would be bought by a family member as a christmas present so it could technically be a free upgrade for me or a free #160 towards the new card

Yeah I'm leaning more towards a new card but just not looking forward to having no gpu until the one is sold and the other is purchased lol. I sold my 580 when I got my 970 and gave away my 480 and 460 :( I should really keep spares lol

No, do not assume that SLI in VR will get better supported in the future. There is no reason to think this will be the case. VR requires perfect frametiming and extremely low latency. Two things SLI are not great at. Nvidia have been working on specific per-eye SLI implementation for VR, but nothing much has been made of it in terms of in-app implementations.

I'd only ever recommend single cards for anybody, but *especially* for VR users at the moment.

just looking at 1070s now and watched a few comparison vids against the 2.
not too clued up on sli at the min as the last cards i sli'd were 8800gt's so looks like it will be the 1070. thanks for the help guys

I wouldn't go too mad spending on a 1070 btw - most of them will perform really really close so spending like nearly £600 on one of the top end models doesn't make much sense - I'd look at what have good reputation or a cooler you like or the warranty or something.

Th 970's ram is too low for future games. It would be crazy to go sli now over a single card.

This.

I've recently upgraded from a 970 to a 1070. I've just finished Gears of War 4 and am now part way through Mirrors Edge Catalyst. I've seen gears hit over 7GB of VRAM usage at some points and Mirrors Edge reguarely sits around 5.5-6 when everything is on ultra at 1440p.

The 4GB (or 3.5) of VRAM on the 970 might be enough for 1080p, but even then it's only just and it wont be long before that amount of vram wont cut it unless your happy to drop to medium textures.

Seeing as how very few people picked up on how you were talking about VR specifically, and the fact that they probably dont know jack squat about VR in general, I'd really recommend taking VR-specific comments to a more VR-dedicated forum, OP. People here will give all kinds of uninformed advice.

If it is for VR the answer is simple get a 1070, don't trust that developers or Nvidia will support SLI correctly for all titles in VR. Also the memory boost from a 970 will be worth it too. The 970 SLI should not be considered at all for VR main use.

Out of curiosity what uninformed information do you think he has been given? Is it not generally acknowledged that single card solutions are better for VR, and that the 10XX series has some VR optimised features? Everybody seems to be giving him the correct advice to me.
