Details on five hundred million Yahoo user accounts compromised - UPDATE - Now all accounts

They're saying it because the method used was incredibly similar (to be read as 'exactly the same as') compared to previous Russian state sponsored hacks.
Though what they're not saying is Russia sponsored it.

Wonder if thats because russia has since caught and employed these hackers

What would a government need from a company like yahoo? It's not as though they're central to western stability.

You'd cross reference it with a database of known people who may have useful info you could access eg political, military, scientific etc. Who knows what you may turn up stuff to blackmail people with, state secrets etc.

Let's face it Hilary Clinton was probably running the State Dept through one.

So Sky have confirmed they are included in the breach and suggest changing passwords for both the email and the sky id accounts.

Russia did it for the Sky Go accounts.

Just seen the email, trouble is, the email address i used for my Sky id, doesn't exist anymore, so ill have to change it to something else, like Gmail (if it can be used for the id ?), or i won't get the email they send to change my password, and that also means i'll have to create a Gmail one as well :p

What i don't get, is they say they've got names and addresses, passwords, phone numbers etc...., so what good is changing your password going to do now, when they've had all those details for 2 years ?

Good point I hadn't considered that.

I'd have hoped they'd be using something more secure but from recent news evidently not.

Old saying.......

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. ;)

This is why I don't do pay by mobile phone. Might not be related but do know you how easy it is to be infiltrated though trust of a conglomerate corporation.

1 hack and half a billion people are compromised, go internet! :p

People need to wake up and smell the coffee so to say.

Well thats me sorted.

Had to make a Gmail account first, so i could switch my Sky id to it, as the one i was using for it, didn't exist anymore, so if id have just done a password change, i wouldn't have got the email to do it :p

What annoys me the most is that they wont ever be taken to any meaningful task about these breaches. I can but hope that people just move away from them and hope that this effects their bottom line enough.

Governments seem either neutered or unwilling to do anything about these companies, not surprising considering they cant even jail banks and their employees.

It just depresses me :(

Haven't used Yahoo for many years, just tried to log in and couldn't remember the password. Asked if it could send a code to my alternative address which is a hotmail that I set up even longer ago!
Ah well I guess that's that account gone then!

Must admit that I am one of these strange people that use a Yahoo email account as my primary. I do have a Gmail account too but I've had the Yahoo account for years. Changed my password a couple of times since 2014 so not too worried
