Car per parent and child if late teens. My parents house built in the 50s could fit 4 cars on it and plenty of room on the roads.

Quite a few years ago some people in our street could apply for 4" diameter posts to be sledgehammered into the grass and basically the posts have killed the grass (I'll have to get some pictures).
We've just had a new neighbour and he was out the other day sledgehammering his out of the ground.
If we all parked on the road down our street we'd only get about 50% of what we get now, I'm lucky because I can get 4 cars up my drive.

That would completely change the character of any area. I would think that most people like grass verges, and I personally think it is sad when they are lost.

The ever increasing number of cars on the roads is a problem that cannot be solved by capacity. Genuine alternatives need to be provided.

Accommodating current number of cars wont work. By the time you are done with the current number, itl be 5 years later and so many more cars are on the road you will have to pull parking spaces out of thin air.

Focusing on public transport would be the way forward. Personal car culture has to change regardless. People who can get away with driving less, should drive less. Bus' and trains shouldnt seem second rate or expensive. Carpooling should be more common and there should be incentives for companies to introduce things like petrol subsidies or re-reimbursement for carpoolers.

uber and tesla self driving fleet plans may well do it, as long as its reasonably priced. many of us don't need cars they're just sat there doing nothing 99.8% of the time.
then plenty of people who do need a car will be happy renting there's out to the likes of me.

Looks like the way forward is to limit the number of cars per house/street (for long distance trips of >5 miles) and get Sir Clive Sinclair to mass produce communal Boris C5s for those shorter trips.

Or better yet, get them on e-bikes for short journeys, if they have good reason not to get their completely under their own steam.
