Hi guys the wife is getting me a 34inch 3440x1440 AOC monitor for Christmas.
I'm going to buy the gpu.
What performance is there between something like a high end

Gtx 1070 Zotac amp extreme
Or a
Gtx 1080 zotac amp entry level card
Or any high end 1070 vs low end 1080

The price difference is about €150 where I'm looking.

Is the extra worth it for the 1080.

Bearing in mind in currently running a
Msi lighting 7970 on a Dell 1920x1200 monitor.

1080 maybe.

Edit: Depends on your needs really. What type of games do you play? Will you really benefit from the extra fps? If you are not the sort to sell and buy new every year or two, I would go 1080 if only 150 euro difference.

Unless you need the 1080 i would likely save the cash and get a 1070, but i say that running an RX480 so my opinion may not be relevant!

Have to say I've be tempted to suggest a 1080 - if you want to turn everything up in the latest games (and why wouldn't you at that res) even with a small sacrifice to AA the 1070 sometimes doesn't have a lot of margin at 1440p UW and above though is fine for 2560x1440 - I've a 1070 and a bunch of panels including 1440p, 21:9 and 4K.

Regarding the performance difference - most 1070s and 1080s regardless of how "high end" in the lineup they are aren't hugely difference performance wise within the same lineup - most 1070s will be very very close to most other 1070s and likewise most 1080s close to any other 1080 and there will still be around the same kind of gap between a high end 1070 and a low end 1080. The only exception might be some that have an extreme BIOS that opens the power limits right up and let you really put high end cooling to work. So I wouldn't go mad buying an expensive model just go on stuff like warranty, what kind of cooler you like and/or brand/model reputation.

I'm running a single 980 Ti with my X34, as things stand currently it's roughly equivalent to a 1070. It copes admirably tbh, with a bit of tweaking. But also I often find myself wishing I had a little more grunt too. In your shoes I'd go for a 1080. In mine, I'm waiting for January to see what the 1080 Ti is like.

3440x1440 = 1080

crappy lower resolutions = 1070

u need a gsync monitor if u wanna game at 3440x1440p with a 1070 as you will have quiet low FPS <40 with max settings on most new games and gsync shines then..

Honestly even with a lot of options I come back to 2560x1440 time and time again - both 1440p UW and 4K are immense in some situations but I've not fallen in love with either overall - I hate going back to 1080p though when I have to.

Wow cheers for the replies.
I don't plan on upgrading the gpu for a few years.
My 7970 copes fine with the games I play
Battlefield 1
Tomb raider
Mafia 3
Dying light.

With this new monitor I would ideally like to push eye candy.
Don't like the idea of the 1070 "just coping"

The 1080 it is then.

Now just to decide on which model.

Might just push the boat and get the
1080 zotac amp extreme.

1070 flies at 1440p. I play all my games at that res with ultra settings.

For me the 1080 was not worth the extra £200 for 20% extra performance.

My zotac amp 1070 is a superb card. Quiet and cool with good build quality.

Some people seem to have an overly elevated view of the 1080. It is not some godlike card way better than all the others. It's 20% faster than a 1070 / 980ti. For what it costs (£620) it's just not worth it unless you have more money than you know what to do with.

^^ This. Tried both, 1080 just isn't worth the extra cost over the 1070.

The 1080 Ti however ...

What about for semi future proofing as I don't plan on upgrading for good few years.
Games just become more and more demanding.

Yes it's an expensive card but it should last me.

So 1080 here I come

The problem I am seeing with replies here which is very common here is people just justifying the card they have or giving advice based on what their own needs are.

I personally don't think the 1080 is worth it, but that applies to me and my use situation. But if a person does not like to switch cards for a few years like OP, that extra 20% performance for 150 euro may enable smoother gaming for another year maybe. Could be that amount of money is not a big deal to the person vs the hassle of switching out a card sooner. That is why I think the 1080 is not a bad choice at all in this case for OP :)

Absolute Rubbish. GTX1070 runs a 1440p ultrawide 60htz great.

Your great and my great are completely different...

1070 at 3440x1440p is nowhere near enough power for the games I play and image quality I want...

A 1080 and x34 is just about enough some games still dip below 60 fps sometimes... witcher 3 dishonoured 2 etc I game at 100hz not some decade old 60hz crap
