Why risk the safety of other officers? Just contain them where they are and leave the scum to their own devices.

Compared to the great majority of the worlds prison systems ours are superb from a prisoner point of view. The amount of rights they have makes prison life very easy even with overcrowding.
No prisoners are treated like animals in this country.

I don't know how you treat animals but mine are well fed up and looked after.
It's prison - they should be locked up because they are a high risk to the public and of escaping. That's like giving a paedophile a house next to a school....

The government disagrees with you then,
They aren't Govt. troops simply prison tornado squads from all over the country who do regular training in their parent prison and can be called upon at any time.Just regular prison staff who are prepared to do a bit more for nothing extra.
It's more likely you would have **** and p**s thrown at you than paint unless there was some work going on.

So 23hrs locked up. What is the problem?
They're locked up 24/7. Did you even bother reading the article posted?
There may be the odd day when exercise is cancelled otherwise even at a local prison without many workshops they are never banged up all day.
They have to be fed and go to health care, visits etc.

They are locked up 24hrs most times. That's not right - 1hr as per the govt.Doesn't excuse a riot but if that's the case prisons should be inspected.... somebody at the govt isn't telling G4S how crap they are.

Once again, they aren't locked up without exercise except in emergencies, don't take quotes from cons as gospel.

Or everyone is skimming off the top and hoping against hope poo doesn't hit the fan. I thought the whole point with G4S was to put things out of sight and out of mind because the private sector is meant to be ultra efficient? More headache than they're worth, from the looks of it. This is not the first story with them as key protagonists in utter shambles.
It's simply a byproduct of it it being chronically understaffed. Lack of prison officers = less prisoners being attended, so easier to lock them up.

They are locked up in prison as punishment. Being detained in the cell for 23 hours a day is not there punishment.

Yeah, you guys are living in some fantasy world if you think it's as cut and dry as that. Regardless, as someone previously stated - their time is in prison, that does not mean you should be treated less of a human.

in what prison is this, my best friend in a prison officer and i have never heard him talk of 23 hour lock up. The worst seem to be seg which from what i gather is pedo's or high risk (owes drug money etc).
Most have MAX 17 hour lock up with TV and consoles with extra "activity" like cooking/washing etc.
No, they're not the hardcore murderers, rapists, paedophiles usually housed in category a prisons. Of course those prisons would never be understaffed. You also don't know their individual circumstances, sure they committed a crime - but again that does not mean they should no have basic needs, which are obviously not be fulfilled.
