HMP Birmingham

Looks like it's mostly sentences under 4 years with high churn. About 1 in 5 < 12 months. I doubt the majority deserve cruel and unusual punishments due to G4S incompetence on top of what they got already. Being cruel to save cash on staffing costs for the sake of shareholders of a major corporate will only increase recidivism and cost us more in the long run.

Prison Officer for 6 years, been out 2.5ish.

Officers have been saying for years how bad it was, history repeating itself.

Not sure in a private estate like Birmingham is now if an Operation Tornado can be called. The NTRG will be there doing their thing with all the gucci kit but I think G4S has to send their own teams in.

Could be wrong mind, the whole estate Private & Government went to the dogs years ago.

Liz Truss will love this.

*Just seen that G4S has handed back the running of the Prison to HMP, how kind of them.

No, they're not the hardcore murderers, rapists, paedophiles usually housed in category a prisons. Of course those prisons would never be understaffed. You also don't know their individual circumstances, sure they committed a crime - but again that does not mean they should no have basic needs, which are obviously not be fulfilled.

The one being the subject, again a common theme with people in this thread. Don't even bother clicking on the link.

The "24 hour lock up" quote from a former prisoner, im glad you make sure your sources are water tight... *sigh* im sure convicts are 100% trustworthy along with news outlets...

They'll be scum like burglars, car thieves and other such so-called 'low level' crime won't they? As a victim of burglary myself, I say locking 'em for 23 hours a day for the entirety of their sentence is perfectly acceptable. If they don't like it, **** 'em!

They don't get PS4's, at least not in Government run establishments. Was some odd notion about not being able to block the online functionality of the console, although I'm sure you could still get online with Xbox 360's.

Also you only get a console if you a) buy it yourself from money earned by working in Prison and b) are on "enhanced" IEP level which means you have played by the Prison rules and the staff have deemed you to be of a level of trustworthiness which means a few minor extras to help make your stay a little easier.

The won't get locked up for a full 24h, they have to be let out to collect their food, max I ever saw when it was at it's worst was 22h bang up.

Treat people like animals, don't be surprised when they act like animals.

Drugs, fear for Saftey and suicide epidemic, a friend of mine has recently been released from prison and what he's told me it's far from a holiday camp and the prisoners pretty much run the wings. Before you all jump on the "well they must be having the time of their lives" one... imagine the school playground, but filled with men some of whom become the bullies.

Edit: Chanel 4s "secret life of prisons: cutting edge" is a good watch for a real look at what our prisons are like.

its a lot easier now then it was back in the day.

prison has always been a violent place and always will be.

only difference is back then it was full of hardcore criminals, nowadays its full of tom dick and harry.

nowadays people get locked up for not paying council tax and other petty stuff.

rioting over tv time them ***** should be glad they got tv, hot water, kettle and toilets in the cells.

When they come out, would you rather have a hardened criminal at risk of re-offending -- ****ing you back, as it were -- or a reformed citizen for a neighbour?

Why should the punishment be disproportionate to their crimes based on a private contractor's desire for profits? This helps nobody.

"Back in the day" - people used to get locked up for not paying poll tax don't forget.

It was harder back in the day, slopping out etc but it's no funfair now.

You still get hardcore criminals.

definately not fun fair but its a hell of a lot easier than it used to be.

back then if you looked at a screw in the wrong way you would get a good hiding.

nowadays the screws are scared of the cons.

Is this speaking from experience?

I've watched porridge and it looked alright in those days to me.

Nice of the media to report that the prison in now back under control when it isn't, right on the last minute of the most watched news. :D :D
