Gtx 1070 or 1080

I have to say that my experience is very different compared to some of the answers here.

I ran a GTX 970 at 1440p, 144 hz for about a year and a half. Granted, not full eye candy but still pretty good quality.

In my eyes a 1070 is so much more than a 1080p card :)

I've used both the 1080 and 1070, both cope with 1440P fine. 1080 really isn't that much faster, especially for nearly double the price in some cases.

Each to their own though, I blew a wad on the older Titans back in the day. Sometimes you gotta have the fastest, cost and sanity be damned xD

I've tried 3440x1440 with a 1070 and while I've not been able to play with a 1080 at that res yet IMO that extra 20-25% performance would make quite a difference i.e. DX:MD at 2560x1440 I was able to keep most stuff turned up nicely and keep framerates smooth but 3440x1440 I was having to sacrifice a couple of visual settings or deal with some places where the framerate didn't feel fluid - but I was only just falling short.

I agree, not sure if my post made it clear but I chose the 1080

I'm fully aware of how things move on. You'll never keep up unless you spend heavily each year on year. What you will find is that a 1080 will be classed as a 1440p card at best in 9 months (as was the 980ti classed as the best 1440p card 9 months ago). Advice is a fickle thing here. Go with what you can afford, hell I buy willy nilly but I have multiple set ups doing different things. Enjoy anyways.

The 1080 will fly faster at 1080 or 1440p. If you don't mind spending 1080 money then I'd say just buy a 1080 - buy the best you can afford or justify paying. You cannot have too much performance :). Although I've not seen it said in this thread, the word overkill should be banned from these forums and blanked out as a swear word :D

If you can afford it get 1080.

I've just upgraded to 1080 even though I play at 2560x1080p. Fans on the card barely need to spin when I play. :) Made my PC totally silent and it's worth it just for that. To me anyway.

agreed. Being totally quiet is worth a lot to me as well, as my main computer is in the living room so can't really subject the family to the noise of a plane :)
