Is this legal?

I reversed into a skip this morning and smashed the rear screen, Autoglass have been to weatherproof it until Tuesday.

Is it legal to drive with the cover taped over it?

As long as it's secure, why wouldn't it be? You don't have to have windows at all...

The guy from Autoglass said it was illegal,

Looking at the flimsy cover I'd guess doing 30 around town is ok but maybe 60 could get me pulled over

It was clearly surplus to requirement in the first instance if you managed to reverse in to a bloody skip!

It's a curious one though. Some vehicles as said don't have rear windows, yet if you or I had no rear view mirror that's an mot fail.

A window salesman told you it was illegal not to have a window? Fancy that.

Is driving around with a car that would fail an MOT okay now?

edit:

Apparently wouldn't fail an MOT.

I dont think rear visibility is usually blocked in a convertible with the roof down.

A closer analogy would be a van with solid rear doors.

That's how that car is designed, having what is essentially cling film over the tailgate window isn't

No , he told me it was illegal to drive with the temporary cling film cover over it, I'm already getting a replacement window fitted on Tuesday so he has no reason to sell anything to me, besides he's fitter not a salesman :)

Anyways I can only guess that the cover could come off when driving and that's why it could be dangerous and illegal

I've had a car pass the MOT with the windscreen removed. Some of you really over think things.

It would only be illegal if it wasn't secured correctly and posed a hazard to other road users.

There is no requirement for a rear window on a vehicle transparent or not! - why he'd say that lord knows

The guy was just a fitter and not a particularly bright one at that!

There is no legal requirement to have any glass (or a substitute there of including perspex, polythene etc) fitted - and this includes the windscreen. However, if glass (or a substitute there of including perspex, polythene etc) is fitted it must not interfere with the drivers field of view and must let a required amount of light through (different for side windows vs windscreen).
