Canon SX420 equivalent - xmas present!

The SX420 is a really bad camera - same sensor size as a mobile phone (not even a good mobile phone), and no RAW capability. You'd be far better off spending the money on a 2nd hand APSC/m43 camera and lens imo.
uv is right, it's a shocking camera almost all superzoom bridge cameras are.
However as your dad has specifically requested it I wouldn't get him anything else as if he doesn't like what you get him regardless of how good it is, it may be your fault.
