Truck crashes into Christmas market in Berlin

It's now being reported that the German special forces unit has stormed a hangar at Berlin airport, where it says the suspect had been living in a refugee shelter.

Can anyone confirm if the Berlin market had any concrete barriers up, similar to those currently being used in Birmingham?

Whether it would have stopped a HGV of course is a different question.

Someone was being interviewed on the BBC last night and they specifically mentioned they hadn't seen any barriers like Birmingham.

Islam isn't the problem, Islamic extremists using Islam to justify their actions is what the problem is.

It's getting pretty old though...I see what you're saying, but at the same time we saw a guy get assassinated live on TV while his assassin shouted "Allahu Akhbar", and later on a lorry driven by another person has ploughed into a Christmas market killing 12 people.
Chances that he is acting in the name of Allahu? Prob quite high I would say...

I listened to this story on the radio on my drive in to work. My hairs stood on end, it's difficult to describe how I felt but deep sorrow mixed with anger would be the headlines.

Those people in Berlin didn't deserve to die nor did the people in Nice or Brussels or Paris or any number of other places in Europe. But then again neither did Libya, Eygpt, Syria or Iraq deserve to be so violently unsettled and the horrific consequences that has led to.

There is a whole generation of well meaning but wrong headed politicians the World over who have thrown Europe and the Middle East into chaos. Their solution is always more of what we've already tried. The side effects of their ideas are being played out across the 24 hour news networks daily, I despise these idiots. Having grown up during the final years of the Cold War when things were getting better and the general existential threat was lifting I find the current situation so sad.

RIP

Same, I remember the walls coming down, the cold war thawing, the Troubles coming to an end. We should be in an extended period of peace in the West.

The Middle East may have been a mess, but it would have been their mess confined to their region and theirs to deal with.

Instead we've had to feed the US military industrial machine (justified by a pack of lies) and in return we've got this monster of generations of young Arabs growing up dragging the bodies of their family members out of the rubble of their hometowns and ISIS whispering in their ear telling them who is to blame and how they can avenge them.

RIP to all who died.

The taxi driver this morning said his daughter was in a restaurant by the markets and as they walked to go into them all the people were running. Lucky escape.

There's no need to question why this happened in the first place either.

and 0.00000001% of Muslims are terrorists. What's your point?

No one is defending terrorists.

Are you sure it's that low? Some recent studies have indicated that up to 25% of Muslims hold extremest views.

And from personal experiance i would say it's a bit more than that

Why does Germany seem to think Pakistan is a country from which a national needs to take refuge, and let them in as a refugee? It's totally risible watching the news with experts from Germany discussing their security arrangements whilst over a million, some cite two million, un-vetted mainly young men have not only been allowed, but encouraged to enter the country.

Over 80% mysteriously had no papers. It makes a mockery of the word security, and is criminal negligence by the EU, and Germany in particular, to have allowed such free migration to have occurred, and worse, still be occurring with their help and support. Appalling.

Yeah except the Bible is almost entirely contradictory. You have all of this and then you have Jesus saying love everyone

The new testament is supposed to supersede everything that came before. So we were supposed to drop the teaching of Moses (Which the Jews still follow because they rejected Christ) and follow Christ (Christians and Catholics)

The last crusades were in response to Muslims trying to invade Europe in the Ottoman Wars in the 15th century.

I put that out there because some here are slow learners

And in the same vein I think we should ban right wing ideologies. It's a violent non inclusive ideology that causes terrorism and murder, with dozens of deaths and multiple incidences over the last few years. All the people to that adhere to it should be included in that blame, just because they follow that ideology.

We have banned right wing ideologies. The Nazi party is banned outright in a number of countries and people in lots of counties have been thrown in prison for Holocaust denial and holding such views.
