How does this trick for freeing up space on iPhones actually work?

Read about this earlier, I'm probably late in knowing about this but I just tried it and it actually works. Freed up over 4 Gb storage space on my iPhone 6. So how does it work?:-

For anyone who can't be bothered clicking on the link, its the trick where you 'rent' a huge sized HD movie via iTunes knowing full well that it won't fit on the phone. Once the message pops up telling you this you go to settings and look in the 'About' section and lo and behold - loads of free space! :eek:
 
300MB to 1.68GB - cheers :)

edit: Noticed Facebook, then Safari and Hangouts said 'cleaning' so guess it kicks off some app cleanup maintenance - now 2.59GB free.
 
Just did this on my sisters 64gb iPhone 6 as she was complaining her phone always runs out of space.
Went from 450mb free space to 6.97Gb free space.... not going to turn this into an anti Apple rant but seriously.... WTF???
She went into an apple store last week and they suggested she upgrades her phone or purchases more icloud storage... funny they didn't suggest doing this isnt it. :rolleyes:

Perhaps they don't know about it?
Not really a surprise that a sales person tried to suggest iCloud which if you weigh it up is probably the better solution in terms of everything been backed up anyway but I do see your point.

Just tried it myself and it worked, a clever trick. I guess Apple really want to sell you that film to rent so will pull out these little software tricks to try and make that possible haha.
