Anyone researched their family tree?

My mum started doing ours last year, she has both sides mapped back to early 1800 and into 1700's but it gets harder to track back, i have a copy here mapped out how far she has got, but its an ongoing family interest.

My sister did it years ago - back to the 1400s IIRC - ancestors of any note include Captain Daniel Bolt of the Harbinger and Mary Sidney (sister of Sir Philip Sidney) who is often considered the actual author of some of Shakespeare's work.

One slightly interesting aspect is that one of my grandparents pretty much appeared out of nowhere in the 1920s or 1930s or something with nothing traceable before that and any past details on them before that date don't appear to check out with other verifiable information.

We did my dad's side last year. Turns out they've lived in the same 3 mile radius for over 250 years & which I now live pretty much bang in the centre of :D

I had an uncle (RIP now) who did it it went back as far to a knight to the Roman Empire, around Germania. Well over a thousand yrs ago.. I was quite impressed. Also it was interesting to see how my last name's spelling has slightly changed over the yrs. Then after the Romans, it moved down to Southern Italy / Scicily, (presumably back after the fall of the Roman Empire) then to Malta, then to France / North Africa as French, til they kicked out the French, then my parents settled in England, and now I'm continuing the legacy in the USA and with my two sons it'll grow out from here in the US now.

I've just used familysearch.org for free and found my nan's maiden name and year of marriage (1935) to my grandad. My nan's surname before marriage was 'Mark'. Strange one.

It gives me something to build on at least. This could get addictive. :)

Not wishing to derail the thread at all, but never been interested in finding out, personally. I know where my parents/grandparents are from, and anything beyond that has no real connection to me.

That said, I can see why people might find it interesting.

I had a new student a few weeks ago who claims to be the 77th generation descendant of Confucius. No real way to refute that, but given the limited number of Chinese surnames, I reckon quite a few people could make that claim.

My parents have, back to the early to mid 1700s I believe. Through a combination of ancestry.org, family gatherings (info gatherings) and other research.

Some interesting things, couple of murders (family were victims) and generally not very interesting at all.

I'm sort of related by adoption to Neil Morrissey.

Having a general interest in history along with a curiosity for how families lived/migrated/came about definitely helps :)

I've still not tried any paid services but i'll get signed up during my downtime over xmas!
