Been quoted:

£533.99 Cambelt Kit Replacement
£398.99 for rear brake pad and discs

Seems a bit excessive - will ring round tomorrow - but anyone got experience of these?

French filth is often a ****ing awkward PITA to work on. So I am happy to be charging plenty the fools who buy it for the privilege of working on it! :D

More details on engine would allow a more accurate assessment of reasonability.

Renault rear disks often come complete with new wheel bearings as a complete assembly so this might seem expensive but is not actually that bad a deal.

But without more vehicle details it is hard to tell. :p

Where abouts in the country are you? Price the parts on Renault parts direct and see how it seems.

Cambelt labour sounds almost reasonable, again depending where you are in the UK...

£250 labour for rear brakes is a **** take though.

Also, Renaults will need the aux belt doing at the same time as the cam belt so budget for one of those but they aren't expensive and should add nothing to the labour fee as it needs to come off anyway for access to the cambelt.

Aarons autos in derby are good if you are anywhere near there. I used em for my Megane and was very happy with their service.

I'm in Bucks.

Those are genuine parts too.

Found a local place that does fixed price brakes at £144.95 and cambelt dependant on whether its single, double or four cam () £200 - £300.

You need to be careful about this.

I haven't looked this up yet, but if they are a "bearings in disks" set up, you cannot realisticly transfer old bearings to new disks and "Cheap" disks might be priced minus bearings.

Just be careful what you are comparing with.

Apples and Pears is one thing,

Apples and Meatloaf is something else altogether!

Maybe ask if first place could do them both for £800?

I'd even be tempted to check halfords auto centre for a quote. They have 20% off repairs right now I think and you can pay your bill over 3 months if that helps. (they also beat other quotes I believe)

Yeah Renaults are a bit of a pain in the bum, I did rear pads and discs on a megane last week which I believe came to £250, mostly due to those discs. Some new discs don't come with bearings or the ABS exciter rings so you have to swap those over without damaging anything which is pretty much impossible.

The last cambelt job came to about £440 but that was with a new waterpump, they aren't *that* bad to do but not the nicest thanks to very limited room at the front and having to faff at the back to get the timing tool in. Renaults also like to throw cam pulleys if it has variable valve timing, especially if you use the wrong oil grade and that can be another £150+.

All that said though I encourage anyone and everyone to buy Renault, I call it 'job security'.

cambelt price is probably reasonable but the brakes I think they are having you on. that is a lot of labour as the parts are not super expensive for brakes
