I had windows 7 ultimate installed which was a retail version, and then updated free to windows 10.

So my question is could I reinstall win7 on my new system and then update to win 10 again or do I need a new key because it's a new motherboard.

I think you can attach the windows 10 digital licence to your microsoft account.

If you have done that, then it should be a case of logging in and reactivating.

Surely it's one machine per CD key. Either Win 7 OR Win 10?

I always thought a retail version allows you to install as many times on any motherboard upgrade.

and oem is install as many times with one motherboard.

as I have a retail version of windows 7 , I could install on an upgrade.
But as I updated win 7 to win 10 for free I'm not sure if this still allowed for win 10.

I might be wrong but that's what I thought.
