Depends, where i am most journeys are around the 30 mimute mark, but thats 30 minutes of doing a decent rate and not getting stuck in traffic, so cycling as a commuting tool wont work for me, but i do a fair bit recreationally (mostly off road, but of course youve got to get to the off road bit)

No I appreciate 30 minutes to one person might be wildly different to someone else. So as I said earlier in the thread - we should be tackling the fact that the majority of car journeys are under 7 miles.

He got two 18 month sentences ... either way, it's WAY too lenient for causing the death of a man. If I were the cyclists family I'd be furious.

Today Chapman was sentenced to 18 months in prison for causing death by careless driving and a total of 18 months for two counts of perverting the course of justice, which will run consecutively.

He was also disqualified from driving for five and a half years.

I don't understand how causing death by careless driving should come with anything but a lifetime ban on driving. I mean it's a privilege not a human right. The fact that he's allowed back on the road in under 6 years is absolutely bonkers.

The most common defence is that a disqualification from driving would hurt their livelihood or affect their quality of life.

Which is downright offensive to the victims.

As noted, I think you are confusing the highlighted bus lanes as cycle lanes.

As we are on the topic of cycle lanes, should cars be allowed to park on cycle lanes, therefore causing cyclists to have to divert around them?

You think that's bad, my next door neighbour was walking along a pavement when a car mounted the pavement hitting him and killing him instantly. The driver then fled the scene. Later that day the police tracked down the driver, found him drunk at home mid afternoon, he denied all knowledge of hitting Simon even though there was blood and part of Simons leg lodged in the grill of his car. He got off scott free even though it was likely he was drunk driving, the police couldn't prove it, and being the mayor of the town probably helped him get away with it. Can't remember if he got a driving ban, but I do know he didn't go to prison.

Yes - I will use cycle lanes where possible but when they're poorly maintained and covered in rubbish (not necessarily dangerous, but not good conditions) then I'd still ride on the road. Also the fact that cycle lane priority can be a real PITA.

That's shocking.

He was the mayor and lied through his teeth the whole trial even though there were multiple witnesses to him killing Simon.

His exscuse for being drunk when the Police turned up was that he saw blood and realised he'd his something and "Had a drink" to steady his nerves.

Not playing the victim card here, but most instances of dangerous driving involving cycling victims (including deaths!) have absolutely pitiful punishments.

I honestly think I would receive a greater a punishment if I stole a Twix from my local shop!

Is there a news source for this?

In an ideal world they shouldn't ne allowed to park, but the practicality is difficult as many are on residential streets.

What annoys me when cycling is passing cars parked on a marked cycle lane, a meter out from tje car to prevent being doored, getting abuse from drivers for not being in tbe cycle lane, when there's cars dotted down it, there's no point, you just have to ride in the road in primary position.
