I have bought a used car part from ebay which has turned up defective and not as described which was also 3 days late on postage as he lied about dispatch date. I have opened a ebay returns case but he has replied to me regarding the return through a past PM from asking for a tracking number. He has basically said that he will refund me the money if I post back to him.

I thought this should be done through the ebay resolution centre? I have never had to return anything before luckily.

Yes it should. Just do it through the resolution centre and wait for him to accept. You hold all the cards in this situation.

Even if he doesn't accept, you still get your money back at the end of it.

Make sure you give ebay the tracking number, and the res center is only meant to be there as alast resort, if he has offered to fully refund you, on return of item, then i think thats more than fair

But if he does it through the resolution center, the seller has to pay for the return postage.

I have sold a lot of things on ebay, and had items that the buyer said was "broken" lol,,,,, and i have not paid postage costs on returns

As above, res center, seller pays return postage. Wait for them to send you a prepaid label or wait for 8 days and ebay steps in and fully refunds you regardless of return or not.

I've had to return an item on Ebay before as it was not as described, I went through the Resolution Center and I was given a prepaid label and my money was returned without a problem. Do everything through Ebay and you'll be fine.
