I've temporarily commandeered a 2008-era HP desktop computer as my laptop has broken. It's a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo E7200 / 4GB RAM system and surprisingly nippy at day-to-day tasks. Can anyone tell me of any cheapo GPUs that will fit inside this computer? I only want to play something like Shadowrun: Hong Kong on it.

Here's a PDF with more system specs. It appears to have a PCIe x16 slot.

I'd look around the secondhand market for something like a cheap low profile HD5570, I added one to an old dual core HP system a few years back and it did a great job on a 1600x900 resolution screen. That was more than capable of running the STALKER trilogy, Fallout3/New Vegas and other such games of the day. I don't imagine you want to spend much but if you want more grunt than that how about a low profile 750ti, That's just about the fastest card you'll get with no additional power requirements.
 
OK, I need some extra help, please.

I've borrowed an nVidia 640 GPU and took the back plate off. The card is now low profile. :p

I've looked online, it says the card is PCI Express 3.0 but this computer is PCI Express 1 only. They are supposed to be backwards compatible right?

Secondly, on nVidia's website it says the minimum power is 300-350W, on the HP spec sheet this computer says it's 280W. Is this the problem?

The card doesn't need extra power. The fan is spinning up but it is not being recognised in Windows at all. There is supposed to be an option in the BIOS to select GPUs but it's not appearing suggesting the card is not being recognised right at the system level. Is it too new for this computer or is this card borked?

The card should work fine. Are you sure the cable is connected to the motherboard and not the GPU?
