80% of Britons unhealthy

Far too many of us middle aged people have been eating too much for the amount of activity we do, often using cars for short journeys of less than five miles, which are usually very easily done by cycle.

The younger generation needs to wise up, they are spending far too much time on front of consoles instead of playing football etc.

Not sure what any of that has to do with the thread.

I work in a very busy supermarket the amount of crisps, biscuits, chocolate and other unhealthy foods we sell everyday is mind boggling. People seem to not care what they shovel in.

More people dying younger will help with the pensions and housing crises. Silver lining innit. Youngsters need to be feeding oldies cake and chips.

The problem is, as a human being - it's programmed into our DNA to want sweet sugary food, as 100-200k years ago, the environment in which we evolved - that sort of thing was very rare and you'd cram as much as you could - then live for weeks before the next load.

Nowadays, we stop at the petrol station and instead of it just being a petrol station, it's also a McDonalds/Subway/BK/Starbucks, and after all of that - on your way to pay for the petrol, you're herded back and forth through a maze of chocolate and crisps in front of the checkouts, this sort of thing is insane - and now we're feeling the cost of it on our health.

But like all governments, riddled with incompetence and cretins of the lowest order - fail at every stage to implement simple, sensible guidance or restrictions until it turns into an epidemic, at which point the best thing they can come up with it "more tax"

Most of my friends are overweight and even laugh at how tiny I am despite weighing 13 stone. I've often invited them on bike rides, runs etc. But they don't give a crap. It's already catching up with them.

Have to hold my hand up to this one - eaten too much and don't exercise enough in winter.

Got on scales this morning and found I am up to 137lb from 134lb:eek:

xmas pud -mince pies - cream -crisps -cheese and wine. - must stop this wild eating and go back to the salmon sarnies with crusts cut off.

It does say in my daily paper that the calorie count for male adult of 2500 is now out of date - it was recommended for people just after the war but people of today do not do the amount of physical things they did then.

I don't know my weight as I don't have any scales but last time I checked, I think it more nearing 11 stone. I don't ever seem to look overweight even though I can eat like a horse if I want.

I try walk as much as possible. Going to town is a 50 minute walk each way. When I go to my hairdressers, that is an hour and 10 minutes each way. When I had my previous job, I used to walk to and from work which was an hour each each way.

Boxing Day I was out walking for probably an hour and half and I'll be going back out for another either today or tomorrow.

The problem is time, when you get home from work at 7pm you don't want to be wasting 30 mins riding to the shop when you need to be in bed 3.5 hours later to be up for work again at 6.

My diet is usually very good, I hit the gym 3 times a week and cycle to work everyday, usually around 11-12 hours of exercise a week, I'm perfectly happy with my current level of activity and my diet.

A lot of people could include exercising into their daily routine but they're not bothered until it's too late. Funny.

That's an excellent point actually.

I don't think it is the government's responsibility to regulate what moronic people put in their mouths. They educate them, and they ignore it. How long has the 5-a-day thing been going for? Ok it's not a perfect scheme but it does promote healthy eating and the importance of it. And yet peoples waistlines have only been getting bigger since. It's the poor decisions of the individual and nothing else. It's not the governments fault you decide to have McDonalds when you know that it isn't good for you.

And damn right they should tax it. The government has taxed peoples vices especially ones that are bad for their health for a long time, and they should keep at it.

Agreed and thats why when i was losing weight a couple years ago step 1 was changing job. I eat well but i would have to starve myself to lose weight with how inactive i was before.

They should tax on a calorie/Kilo basis and be done with it, the revenue would be amazing.

The problem with telling people "advice" is that half the time it comes from "nutritional scientists" who seemingly have no real idea at all considering it seems that you can contradict it so often. Going from saying "X is going to kill you" to "X will save your life" gets a bit boring.

im not sad abut it so why would i .

as to the relevance of course its relevant.most of the recent stars dying have been mainly due to excess.drinking / drugs.

we are generally lazy now compared to previous generations.in many ways.we live more excessivly now than ever.so obviously it will have a knock on effect.
