On the road....
Chatting to my dad over Christmas I've found out he's looking for a replacement for my mums Corsa D, it's a 1.0 3 cylinder jobbie and she hates its lack of grunt and that it's only a 3dr.

My dad will use it also but has knee problems so an auto is a must, also wants 5 doors (grandchildren and dogs to transport) and non low profile tyres for better ride comfort, their only other stipulation is parking sensors.

He wants petrol as it'll do low mileage and he doesn't want DPF issues.

He's thinking along the lines of a 12/13 plate Audi A1, I suggested something like a 116/118i instead - no balls of Fire but vastly better performance than the current car she has - (I prefer BMW's to Audi personally) my mum isn't too bothered either way but liked her e36 and later e46 318i so I presume she'd like the 1 series, my sister had a 116i which mum liked very much tbh.

Budget upto £14k but leeway either way, my dads going to take her to look at this later in the week to see what she thinks of the 1 series ,not a potential purchase more to just get a feel of it as such,in all honesty he will most likely buy in the early spring.

Any other suggestions? VW? Merc? Something else?

Cheers.

I'd say look at the A-Class but I don't know if it comes in a petrol guise!

She had an early A140 straight after her e36 and hated it with a passion, Dads got a late C180 Kompressor which she very much likes, assuming the later A is not as poor as the early one she may consider it possibly but I don't know tbh.

Not sure I'd be trying to put them in a 1 series personally. A3 or Golf would be my choice. FWD so they dont fear the cold weather even more.

RWD has never been a problem to her, I showed her years back how to drive in poor conditions but generally if the weather is bad, she stays at home or gets my dad to drive!

Not a premium brand, but if they value ride and seat comfort have a look at a Hyundai i30.

The interior is quite a nice too, particularly in SE Nav or Premium spec with the big central screen.

£10k will get you into one < 12 months old, so 4 years warranty remaining, and they only need servicing every 2 years.

Polo GTI? (the newer 1.8 though, avoid the 1.4). You can just about get a low miles one for 14k. They are A1 sized, but you get more for your money.

The ride and seats are excellent (and my car is a Saab) but the petrols are gutless.

Why aren't you considering a 3 series as a 1 series isn't at all premium feeling inside?

The GTI would be total overkill. Current car is a 1 litre Corsa - I cant imagine any need for a jump to a 1.8 TSI Polo that is near enough 180bhp.

Why the A3 over the A1 out of interest?

Because it's much better? It's the equivalent of the 1 series you have mentioned already?

All day long I'd be going for Golf / A3 with the set of requirements you put forward. If it absolutely must be a tiny little car, then Polo would be my first choice for a "premium" badge.

I'd also suggest an A3, some good kit available so a nice 2nd hand buy might net you something quite well specced!

Though if she is happy with the size of a Polo/A1 then a nicely specced (non GTI) Polo would also be a good shout. We've got a 1.4 DSG Polo for the wife and it's got a decent level of kit (parking sensors, Nav, DAB, Bluetooth, etc) and for the £6k it cost us, I think it's a lovely place to sit and quite a smooth drive (7 speed DSG). I think if we'd have had a slightly larger budget we'd have likely got a TSI rather than just an N/A petrol, but with your budget, that would be easily doable, and likely a higher spec than ours to boot.

A3 is only better if it's a current model A3. Avoid the last of the old models.

Don't get me wrong, there are definitely older models available at this price, but when all you are after is a small petrol, with the S Tronic 'box and a few choice options, there's plenty available.

Might be hard to find a full leather car, and probably quite hard to find Xenons, but I'd forgo Xenon in favor of not getting the older car.

EDIT: As Scania also said there was a little leeway on the budget, half-leather and Xenons:
