80% of Britons unhealthy

When you walk around a city and actually look at people, a huge percentage are overweight by some degree, and many are very overweight.

It's a pretty desperate state of affairs really and it's only going to get worse. What's even worse is overweight parents with young overweight children. Makes be really angry that the parents are setting them on that path so young.

Including overweight pets?

What is the definition of overweight? Everyone seems to have their own version of it and according to some a GP would class them as obese.

I think that this thread is very interesting, but few have mentioned those of us with eating disorders. I suffer from binge eating. It is a condition that i find impossible to control despite spending my twenties obssessed with the gym.

If someone like myself, a former fitness freak who loves exercise and has a indepth knowledge of nutrition cannot stay lean (age 33, 15+ stone), it is of no suprise to me the amount of people who are totally fat.

I'm nearly 39 and doing my bit to keep myself fit and healthy. I changed my lifestyle in my mid twenties so now living healthy is easy. This Christmas I've indulged a little and my guts really haven't enjoyed it that much. That's over now so it's back to the norm :)

One thing that isn't really talked about much by the NHS is body composition. BMI used in conjunction with body composition gives a much better all round picture.

I went on holiday to Switzerland / France just prior to Christmas and I have to say it was highly noticeable how many more fatties there are in the UK than the areas I visited whilst away. Sad state of affairs really and I hope those who are choosing to not do anything about it won't end up regretting it later in life.

I once remember you couldn't get anything bigger than XL.

I remember back in college, the average dress size for a woman was 12, this was when it just increased from 10. Now the average is 16 and will be higher in a few years time.

Now we have plus size clothing and models  As if its ok to be overweight and stay like that.

So many people are overweight, it's become 'normal' unfortunately.

I'm not surprised.

Two years ago I went to my docs for a 40 year check up. I was shocked to find out my blood pressure was dangerously high.

I have had to change my lifestyle, and take medications that even caused very bad side effects which resulted in a relationship breakdown (yep) but now I have got myself under control and with a mix of lifestyle and medication I'm now nearly at a normal blood pressure ( blood pressure that is high is a silent killer)

I was two years ago blood pressure 170 / 120 and was suffering crippling headaches, which might or might not have been due to such a high blood pressure, but now cutting alcoholic consumption, eating healthy and walking at least 4 - 5 miles per day (minus maybe Sundays when I take a break) and various medications, I'm now down to using less medication, and around 120 /90 - and that has taken me two years and a lost relationship.

Don't take unhealthy lifestyle like it means nothing. Its actually a lot easier then you think to lead a healthy yet enjoyable lifestyle.

Is still enjoy a drink, and the odd pizza or takeout. But mixed with a healthy lifestyle of walking and fruit, water and veg and even red meats I am as healthy as I've ever been. Even maintaining a correct body mass. Bonus

I devote a whole day every 2 weeks or so to batch cooking my own 'ready' meals. The in the freezer they go for the days I don't have the time to cook from scratch.

I have been bad with the old sugar the past few months, so January become a sugar and booze free month, with daily (week) sessions to the gym.

Feb I will re-introduce booze (as I don't drink that often) and try to see if I can keep the no sugar thing going.

The British culture is work, work, work, work, work and not think about their own well being. A bad habit which needs to stop.

The problem is you cant,if you dont work work work..you dont get paid, paid, paid, the money you need to get by!

Do you really think we want to be there 35-40+ hours a week?..i know id rather be elsewhere. :D

On a plus side of this topic,we bought one of those Air Fryers today,Tea spoon of oil in chips now,No frying..i tend to heave most of my meals done in the Oven anyway but the Air Fryer is much quicker,Highly recommend getting one folks for those new years diets. :p

You weren't getting fat or fatter by traditionally frying chips. You've been sold a gimmick.

You missed my point. I work.....work about 37 hours a week and still have time to go to the gym.

Work, work, work which equals to 60+ silly hours a week. What is considered normal working hours by some in the UK. Then come home, crash out front of a screen and stuff themselves silly because they are too tired to exercise after long working hours.

As I said, better time management.

Sadly I'm one of those 80%, I wouldn't say I eat a lot but I'm lazy, very lazy. Having been diagnosed with gallstones with the worst pain ever, I've had to let go of all oily food and fatty drinks like I can no longer have Costa latte without ending up in the A&E. Turning point was 3 gallbladder attacks in one weekend in October with 3 trips to the A&E.
I've dropped 20kg since September, now 90kg, no gym or exercise, just I dont eat, all I do is vape and have coffee daily. Couple of decent tasting non oil cooked meals per week with a cig or two per week.

It amazes me that people just completely lack self respect to the point they're happy walking around with the body shape of a potato. There's a guy at work constantly complaining he's miserable, single and moans about his appearence and weight, yet he doesn't diet or go to the gym. It took me about 1 year to drop from 13 stone out of shape/chubby to be in decent shape, another year after that and I had visible abs and was fairly muscular. 45 minutes a day training 3-4 times a week is absolutely nothing.

I don't get this too - I work on a floor with 90% women (NHS) and almost all of them are morbidly obese, and the few that aren't are just obese. You would think that women would be more conscious of their appearance, but nope, each one of their legs is the same as both of mine together.

I don't know what they are eating to get like that, I actually have to make a concious effort to gain weight. Every day I eat porridge with peanut butter, then at 10 I have a breakfast sandwich from Co-op, then for lunch I have a McDonald's quarter pounder and a double cheese burger, then later a 500g tub of yogurt. For supper it's whatever there is in the fridge/freezer I can cook quickly. All this just to maintain 77kg @ 5'10".

I go to gym just 3 times a week too (Texas Method). I can only assume they are eating a lot of sugary foods/fizzy drinks.
