Hey guys,

I know nothing about cars so bare with me.

Christmas eve I loaded up our car to drive to parents and the key wouldn't go in the ignition. RAC came out and said the tumbler is F'd. The key now goes in but won't turn.

Is my only option to get the car recovered to near by garage? or are there other ways to get it started? I need it for work and most of the good garages near by me are closed until Jan.

Many thanks

If the key goes in but won't turn, have you tried shifting the steering wheel around while you try and turn the key? Maybe the lock has gotten a bit caught.

This caught me out once in my Corsa, got in my car after work in the heaving rain to find I couldn't turn the key and thought I was going to be walking/bussing it home which meant getting soaked. After much deliberation rang my brother who knows a bit more than me having owned an old Astra for a few years who had that exact answer and it worked a treat.

Yeah gone all the way from full lock to the other side. Car thinks key is inside it. Silly car. :p

Tried that but thanks for suggestion! Think it looks like a recovery is in order. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't being a derp. :)

It's not one of those ignition barrels where you have to push the key in to remove it etc?
Caught me out when I had a Hyundai hire car.

Grind up some pencil graphite in to a powder and use a straw to blow it in the lock. I've fixed a few dodgy barrels using this method.
