Hi Folks,

So I have just completed a pretty heft upgrade of my system and now rock a 1080 and 6700K.

My focus is now on my monitor which I have had for 3-4 years, the DGM IPS-2701WPH.

I randomly was looking at the Dell S2716DG with G-sync and noticed that tft central has an input lag of around 4 ms, in comparison to my DGM IPS-2701WPH's 28ms!

This got me thinking, is this an upgrade path worth pursuing, swapping out a 1440p 60hz for a 1440p Dell S2716DG.

Good choice, or just daft?

Opinions appreciated.

It's not just about input lag, G-sync is also a very interesting technology and is vastly superior to v-sync if you can't stand tearing.

I made the move from a 60Hz IPS to the Dell a few months ago and couldn't be happier. Whilst I was initially concerned about "downgrading" from IPS back to TN it really is a great TN panel with excellent colour reproduction. Of course the viewing angles are much tighter and there is nothing that can be done about the characteristic gamma shift.

However this is a small price to pay for such a fluid gaming experience IMO. I can now afford for minimum FPS to be a little lower as it's not such a jarring drop down to 30FPS when the GPU is struggling with vsync on. This means less time tweaking settings and more time enjoying games. Additionally for titles where your GPU can render > 60Hz it becomes even more fluid.

For me I can't bring myself to go back to TN but from what i've read, the Dell is about as good as it gets in terms of quality.

The price is utterly bonkers though.

Ordered the S2716DG last night.

Although there is no tearing as I always use v-sync the stuttering is noticeable if it drops below 60fps at all.

Looking forward to seeing what all the fuss around G-sync and 60+ fps is all about! Nearly every review I read says you can never go back to 60hz. I have never experienced anything but, and it appears pretty fluid to me, but we shall see!

I was quite concerned I'd struggle to go back to TN also, and although I can see the negatives compared to the previous IPS in my case the benefits outweigh them. It's very much a personal choice though.

As for price I couldn't agree more, picked mine up for £450 whilst on this week only, but I am not sure I'd have paid the current prices.

Hope you enjoy it OP! In case you're not already aware turn v-sync off in games then enable g-sync and v-sync (or fast sync) in the nVidia control panel.

Its crazy - at one point I could get them at £380 now its well over £500 from anywhere reputable. Even when I bought mine it was well under £500.

FYI I am not saying don't buy it.

But that price for a TN is madness, I just can't deny it.

There isn't really a better alternative - believe me I've tried them :S overall the Dell is the best implementation of that panel the Asus is really a half ***** job in comparison - other than the OSD which Asus to their credit did put some effort into but that doesn't make up for the rest (I'd be a little more forgiving if it cost less and didn't have the ROG tax and branding but the Asus ones are far from the premium product the branding and cost would try to suggest).

I quite agree. IPS G-sync is totally overpriced also given the numerous issues with yellow tints and bleed. A monitor at the current price ought to be absolutely faultless.

I'd have the Dell in your position. But i'd be unhappy about paying that much. :p
+1 to this too :)

Prices seem pretty insane across the board. Looking on the Kindle folks store and the price was £700 recently for the Dell!

Anyways, it waseither take the plunge or wait until who knows for the price to drop. Should be here tomorrow. Offloaded my old panel to a colleague last night.

Zola, you said to turn vsync on. Doesn't that not mean that lag will appear on the occasion that the fps exceed 144? Obviously it will be a lot less than my current set up which is solid 60fps.

Agreed, I paid less then £380 for mine due to where I work and Dell discounts, but some places are now asking £550 for these, and I simply do not feel the monitor is worth that much.

Its a cracking TN panel, and G SYNC is amazing - but £550 shocking price for what it is to be truthful.

Yep, you're quite right. You can either leave it off totally which can result in tearing over 144Hz, or you can set v-sync = Fast Sync in the control panel. That will allow the GPU to keep rendering frames but it doesn't output them all to the screen, apparently it's very close to lag free.

Alternatively you can cap your game to 144 or below.

FastSync is a bit hit and miss unfortunately - if it worked perfectly it would be awesome but in some games it will result in noticeable stuttering especially at certain framerates :| when it does work properly though its a real benefit.

Thanks Zola, when you say 'cap' are you meaning through the like of Nvidia Inspector?

^ Yes, although it's not something I am particularly familiar with as none of the games I am playing at the moment get anywhere near 144Hz.

Many recent games also have their own built in limiters too (Watchhdogs 2, Arkham Knight, Forza, The Division).

If the game has a built in limiter it usually gives a bit better results than capping the framerate through nv inspector or MSI Afterburner, etc. I've also found some games seem to have a bit of input latency with framerate capping through inspector that isn't noticeable with AB.

Hi, how much did you pay if you don't mind me asking?
