Bought an old BMW M3, ACTUALLY filled with regret

Details of the speeding offence required.

Were they going 150 in a 20 zone past a school, or 36 in a 30? :p

What's replacing it?

An M4 most likely taking into account a very good deal BMW have offered.

I hope you have a signed sold as seen receipt with time and date on it or something to verify it wasn't you driving :p

Yup I can't see how I can't be covered :) Money was transferred in a bank's branch 2hrs earlier and all docs signed and dated in there.

If the fabled tolerance is 10% + 2mph, why is 80 so harsh?

Because they have to draw the line somewhere.
If a force is following the guideline then they're basically saying that you won't be prosecuted unless you go over 79mph in a 70 limit. Then factor in that car speedos are required to read "fast" by law and the driver has even less of a defence I.e. if a cam snaps you at 80 then your speedometer was showing more than that. Yeah 1mph over the guideline sounds rough, but not so much when you bear in mind that at 70mph the buffer between limit and guideline is already pretty generous.

UPDATE.

So, the M3 went away back in December after taking 13 weeks or what not to repair, sold to a dude down in Manchester, and I did well to not just spend the cash right away and jump straight into something random, or stupid, or whatever :) BMW dealer kept trying to source an M4 convertible of similar spec for me, at a decent discount, as way of 'sorry' I suppose, but this took a LONG time.

Finally got into said M4 convertible early April. Happy with it, happy with the deal certainly - not sure if it's a long term keeper or a 12 month thing then sell at I'd imagine zero loss which is no bad thing in my book.

Mineral white pearl paint, full carbon fibre kit, black leather, airscarf, HUD, harmon kardon, DCT, carbon interior trim.

First impressions are overall it's much more modern than the outgoing V8 M3 I had. Interior plastics are really naff in parts though, corners cut etc - certainly not a touch on my F15 X5. Even the screen is just a smaller, cheaper looking version. Seats are superb, so comfortable, the rear is lacking, but to be expected. Car drives fantastically, definitely quicker than the V8 was and a lot, lot more economical. Noise, not as good as the V8, to be expected, a lot of burbling from the exhaust so it's a different kind of experience. Full write up once I've taken it on a planned euro road trip at the end of the month. Be good if all 4 wheels stay attached to this one.....
