Does anyone here work for HMRC? I have a quick question

I usually submit my online self assessment in order to qualify to pay any tax due via PAYE from my monthly pay (I work full time but also run a part time business).

Stupidly, this year I submitted my online return on 31st December, had it in my head that the deadline for returns was 31st January, which of course it is. However if you wish to have your impending tax bill taken from your PAYE earnings the HMRC website states it needs to be submitted by 30th December. I didn't realise this, stupidly. Kicking myself.

Anyone 'In the know' reckon I'd get any joy if I called them up tomorrow and asked if it could be still done via PAYE as it was a 'only' a day late? Or am I likely to be wasting my time? :(

Ta.

The 30th does seem an odd date, why not the 31st?

If you are lucky, maybe the extra day is a grace period for people who forget?

Hmm so your submission of tax return was just now, did they calculate for you how much tax it would cost when you finalised the submission?

I think tomorrow morning you need to get on the phone.

Yeah, I will give them a call. Submitted on 31st December in the evening, should have been submitted by the 30th though. It did calculate how much I was due, yes.

Phone them, expect a fine though for it. They will say u had reasonable time

A fine is only incurred if you miss the 31st January deadline, there are two distinct deadlines which I mentioned in my first post. I have submitted before the main deadline so I'm in plenty time. Unfortunately by missing the PAYE deadline I've forfeited my ability to spread the tax bill throughout the coming year and I'll need to pay it in one sum. Not ideal after Xmas!

I made the same mistake a few years ago and missed the deadline. I couldn't be bothered chasing it up and just stumped up the cash.

I assume that you owe less than £3,000 and you already pay tax via PAYE (ie. the other two conditions required to pay tax owed through your tax code)?

The 30th is a Friday and not New Year's Eve so not an odd day. Suspect it's automated though so is a bit surprising it has to be submitted on a working day but hey ho that's the rule. Worth a phone call, they can be okay to deal with.....sometimes :).

I have to pay on account this year which makes me sad :(

At the end of the process, if you needed to pay a lump sum the website will have told you that and offered you options for how to pay - e.g. credit card, post a cheque etc.

If it didn't tell you to make a payment, you may have just scraped in and be able to go PAYE.
