New car time. Need help.

So I think it's time to replace my aging golf gt tdi. Car has been great and currently has 160k on the clock. Do about 50 miles a day to work and back plus a bit of driving around town. Undecided if i need a diesel or petrol for those miles.

Looking to spend about 7.5 to 8k. Must have a decent size boot to fit my shooting stuff (shotguns etc). Have cruise control climate control at a minimum. Be nice to have sat nav.

Be great to get some suggestions.

Thinking more mondeo octavia sort of size. Mostly for the big boot space.

I always loved the mondeo, but the dash of the latest models is not to my taste, the octavia is a great motor, i just got a Mk3 a few weeks ago and i love it, i got a TDI CR SE, not the highest spec, but it has so much room and boot... massive.

And i paid 9.5k for a 2013.. here in N.I. prices are higher... but a mondeo of same age would have had higher miles on it.. made the skoda the better deal.

Looked at the skoda supurb but I think thry may be a little to big if that's possible.

The Octavia feels as big inside as a mondeo, but is smaller looking outside, the superb is only 202 mm longer than the octavia.

Mk4 Mondeo sounds like the ticket to me. Not looked into prices for ages tbh!

Seems to be in the ball park for 8k! 2010 - 2012 Titanium X Sport models but Sat Nav still isn't a certainty!

So petrol or diesel guys. Doing about 12k a year. Is the octavia vrs a good option.

12k a year is pretty low I'd go petrol, modern diesels seem to be littered with high failure rate expensive parts!

It's more than a third of the UK average.

In regards to the OP, you have to be doing micro mileage or be seriously negligent or extremely unlucky to end up with problems on a modern diesel.

If he was buying a car for a once weekly trip to tescos round the corner, then yes, buying a diesel would be idiotic.

But he isn't, so I would say test drive all the cars you fancy and pick the one you like best.

Good advice. I do about 25 each way to work and it's mostly motorway miles.

I agree with him. Modern diesels don't seem to be all that reliable once they reach high mileage. Exploding turbos and blown seals seem to be a common thing on them (I experienced both on an Audi A3 at around 80-90k miles). Not cheap to fix! :/
