My sister had a 116i with two under 6year olds and found it ample spacious enough for her, she's got two older lads but they seldom if ever go out as a family and when they did they used her husbands car which was bigger.

The current 116i is plenty nippy enough relative to what your used to, my mums looking for a new car and tried a 116i last week and really liked its performance but she's coming from a 3cyl 1.0 Corsa, I think she found access difficult though (she's 71) so think she'll be looking at other options, I'm badgering her about something like a Focus because like nick.lidgett says she'll get more for her money.

One thing I found with the previous 116 was while it is indeed relatively slow it's quite good fun to take for a blast, handles nicely but doesn't have enough power to get you into trouble!

My daughter is 6 months old so space shouldn't be an issue.

Kids grow, also the space they take up (with toys, equipment, clothes) is not directly proportional to their size.

I'd rather prepare for needing more space than end up looking to change car again in 12 months time.

Doesn't the 116i remap incredibly well?

200bhp well?

I went researching the F20 last night and from what I can work out the F20 116i and the F20 118i have pretty much the same engine.

AC Schnitzer do a tuning package to get the power upto ~200hp but it comes at a premium of £2kish. Cheaper options ave available but the gains look less exciting.

Maybe the base engine is the same, but I bet the stuff around it isn't exactly the same. Plus the 118 has better brakes to cope with the extra performance.

Because a 30% power gain = catastrophic failure right.
Pretty sure you're not percentagising* the gain correctly. Surely it is as a percentage of the original power (50%ish) rather than the final power?

However, I agree, there are plenty of cars out there with that sort of power from a 1.6T and it shouldn't be a major drama. Furthermore, AC Schnitzer offer a warranty that covers the parts that BMW will exclude due to the upgrade. The brakes are also a red herring, more power doesn't make a car harder to stop, driving at higher speeds does...

*a new word, I'm claiming it

You're right , it's 47% but even still the point still remains the same.
Seeing those kind of gains on turbocharged cars is hardly something new

Using this reg/mileage:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201612300898006

Engine oil service: £120
Engine oil service with microfilter: £183
Engine oil service with microfilter, air filter and spark plugs: £307
Brake fluid: £61
Spark Plugs: £84
Vehicle Check: £44
Front Brake Pads: £292
Front Brake Pads and discs: £432
Rear Brake Pads: £212
Rear Brake Pads and discs: £375

For a 1.6?? I can't help but think that's extortionate pricing.

Don't think I've paid no where near £300 for oil, filter and sparks on a 2L Accord.

Chances are it'll still have a service pack on it at that price too, which will cover the service cost for a year or two. Have had my 116i for almost three years now, no complaints here. It's certainly not gutless although I probably would have gone for a 118i if I could have found one at the time in the spec I wanted, at the time the 116i I found wasn't worth turning down. As others have said, certainly check it out for size as it's very cramped inside. Not much of an issue in the front but for anyone in the back it's not much fun.

On a side note, surprised the op is against the auto as it's excellent in these.
