Builders left stuff outside house - what can I do/say to get them to move it?

Builders finished some work months ago and we left on good terms, but it's taken them ages to clear up their stuff and the last few bits of waste/traffic barriers are still there. I've called/texted them repeatedly and they always answer and have a decent excuse but it's taking the **** now.

I will give them an ultimatum to shift it this weekend or report them. The only problem is who do I report them to?

I could say it's been fly tipped?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Just tell them you'll dispose of it very clearly?

(Then sell anything of value and dump the rest?)

Well, this is getting a bit more interesting. I text him to say move it this weekend or I'm reporting it. He called me back and went completely off on one, so I reported it as a obstruction to the council. Hopefully that works.

Your problem was paying them the full amount before the whole job was finished.

+1 for this. I made the mistake of paying an electrician fully before he issued me with a certificate for the work. Now he has no motivation to do it, other than me hastling him. Tedious.

Edit: just saw this:

I held back £400 for last part of the job but they don't seem bothered about doing it.

Take it to the skip and keep the £400 haha.

Is he on checkatrade? If so, leave a negative review, they bloody hate that!

I still can't work out why some professions can get away with this. Not really a coincidence that they seem to be the ones mostly associated with large swathes of cowboys, is it?

I'm not saying you did, but the British attitude to just "taking" that kind of crap does my head in. You're on the phone, hang up, text them and simply remind them that they're an adult and you'll have a conversation when they can act like one.

Saying that, stick on the right side of the law, but it sounds like you are.

I did this with a mate of a mate. I paid him cash and he did it in half the time he originally quoted. I haven't received a certificate and that was a year a go. Apparently the LED lights he installed had a dodgy batch of bulbs in them. He managed to swap 3 with the supplier but I have had to replace at least 4 so far :( I wont be using him again.

I agree, and I would have except he hung up first. I was quite shocked to be honest.

I reported it to the council as an obstruction in the road and they sent around a guy to look at it the same day - impressive! He left a note, I called him and he said he would issue a notice to the company in question. Hopefully when they receive a phone call from someone in the council that will be enough.

Tradesmen around me are terrible....I mean utterly terrible. Never found a decent one in the last 20 years!

Had a plumber fix a basin to the wall with just silicon, and nothing on the pedestal. It wobbled when my 5 year old walked past. Slight pressure and the thing fell off the wall. Those aren't heavy, and could have caused real damage.

Phoned up and he said he was rushing to get home as the football was on the tele.

Had a builder pour cement down our drains, flushed the downstairs toilet and flooded the hallway. Nice!

also had another plumber put a 100cm diameter hole in the wall when fixing a leaky toilet! I kid you not.

Good man, you just need to let it play out. Hopefully it will get sorted in due course!
