Current rig:

3570k @ 4.5
8GB RAM
6870 1GB

Looking to upgrade the graphics for 1080p / steambox usage. Is there any point getting the 8GB over the 4GB?

I personally believe that 4gb with the power of a 480 is plenty if you want 60fps as you'll have to turn settings down long before you hit any memory limit

Aha but your forgetting the driver improvements that have already seen this sail past the 1060, 1070 and now attacking the 1080 ;)

It's not a low end card.

That's the thing, if a £190 4GB card gives 95% of the performance of that £250 one, that's a bad value upgrade.

Considering the performance boost given on DX12 on AMD with the trade off of using more vram than DX11 uses, what if the 8Gb one gives 95% less hitching of that £190 one...

A quid a week over a year not good value/worth it?:p

I wouldn't go for anything 4gb now tbh. Games are starting to use more, even at 1080.

An 8gb one will have a much better resale value as well. Especially in 1-2 years time.

Games are using more video memory all the time(I remember the old 1MB video cards lol), with 8GB it gives you more breathing space and longevity.

I purchased XFX 8GB RX480 GTR Black edition just before xmas, best move I made :) .

They won't be worth much in 2 years as it is and if it costs £50 more now you certainly won't benefit an extra £50 when it comes to resale. Pc hardware isn't an investment and at best you can expect a fraction of what you paid in 2 years time.

I would get the 8mb card for future proofing and they tend to come with better coolers. I bought the msi one which has never broken 60c playing bf1, only as it was a little cheaper than the xfx one at the time.
