"A major bank will fail as a result of a cyber-attack in 2017 "

Been going on for decades, probably easier to 'hack' back in the day than now, remember the Blaster worm used to just jump into your unprotected PC about 2 mins after you went online.

With my Network Security hat on - its possible with the banks. It all depends how much investment each one makes to update its infrastructure to follow the latest trends. If they try to do it on a shoe string then its only a matter of time for a hole to be found which might be a limited attack or worst case a big hack - look at the Tesco bank issue before Xmas.

The hackers might trigger it but the press will likely finish the bank off :). Hackers hack the bank, the press finish the bank off but preying on peoples fears and current hatred towards banks and bankers.

Personal view is that hackers, especially government funded, already have access to a lot of systems and if they chose to could cause mayhem.

Do you know that this year (I think) it's been found that hackers (probably government funded) for years have been taking money our of the international banking system and now we know it, we cannot actually stop it at present? I believe he banking system just accepts the loss.

Source?

Also, everything is hackable if you have the time / resources.

Not quite a major bank, but Tesco had security issues this year.

Oh and the guy who came up with this is an attention seeking idiot.

Source for the banking system thing? Try googling it. Learned about it on a short refresher course by cyber security experts at a client site I'm working on recently. The government funded group are believed to be North Korea, that's what the trail left behind points to. Reason it cant be stopped, too many different systems out there linked into the international banking system - lots of hackable entry points.

Government funded groups have the time and resources :).
Again, personal opinion, I'm sure the UK and USA could turn the lights out in other countries if they needed to or do something aong those lines.

I'll try to find a link and post it re government funded banking system.

Think this is based on the story:
http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2016-05-27/north-korea-linked-with-hacks-stealing-from-banks

I heard as of yet nobody is sure what to do to stop it. Revamp the entire banking system internationally.....who pays for it?
Think another option, or might be unrelated to the above story, to increase security we may end up with lots of different intranets around the world. So Europe or UK even may have it's own, so in future for example we would only be able to get to websites hosted within our intranets. Cant see that happening personally but apparently is one of the options discussed.

I'm sure there are lots of small "hacks" and maybe limited losses - theres no way a bank is going to admit to any of it happening - they just suck up the losses and brush it under the carpet like they do with card fraud

It sounds like the banks are expecting to crash the economy again, next thing kids will be telling teachers that they couldn't do their homework because of the Russians.

"We can no longer deliver HS2 or Heathrow expansion on time/on budget because the Ruskis have stolen all the money".

I'm sure will be valid someday.
