Yes 720p is really old now but that's the resolution of my projector and I'm happy with it for when I'm gaming on the sofa when I'm playing on my WiiU, I also have a steam link connected to it which works well, but I now want to build a htpc for PC gaming and and movies/box sets, I'll be using my old fx8350 and buying a cheap am3+ mitx mobo and case, the only thing I'm stuck on is a GPU, I don't want to spend too much as 720p should be easy to run by current GPU standards, would a rx460 or a 1050 be sufficient for say bf1 on ultra? Or should I be aiming higher?

Not many 720p benchmarks around nowadays!

What's your budget and which PSU do you have?

If you're intending to vsync to 60fps at 720p then just have a look at benchmarks for 1080p and anything maintaining 60fps is going to give you a fair bit of headroom at your lower res.

I don't really have a budget in mind but cheaper the better, I don't have a PSU yet but it will have to be sfx so that will be a 450-600w

There are a couple of mitx am3+ motherboards available, but not many.

Good point about vsync, I'll base my desicion on 1080p benchmarks, more future proof.

Do you think I should be aiming for 4gb cards? Or 2gb be enough?

I'd opt for the GTX 1050 Ti. It's only about £20 extra, and it would be more future-proof, given the fact that it's got 4GB RAM.

The framerate in BF1 at 1280x720 is 65+ fps with most settings on Ultra in this video (at 9:04). It's using 2.5 GB video RAM out of the GTX 1050 Ti's 4GB:

Thank you very much, I think I'll get a 1050ti now
