EK Predator 240 leak (again...)

when working the predator line of liquid coolers are very good at what they do, cool.

Having got both a 360 for CPU and a 280 for GPU I can say they are not without issue's of leaks. which should not be happening with an AOI costing this much.

so far the 360 on the CPU has been trouble free, but the 280 for GPU has developed 2 leaks so far, the first being the pump outlet pipe with hair line cracks to where the fitting screws in, just not enough material around where the fitting screws in and hair line cracks form because of this.

2nd leak was from the res side fitting from the O ring on the back of the fitting, when screwed into the res after some 3 weeks it developed a weap from said O ring.

So again after removing the rad ect from case and seeing what is going on, it appears that the tension on the fitting matters to the O ring seal sealing to res body. if you screw the fitting in finger tight it will seal, but that always feels like its to lose, if you nip the fitting just a quarter of a turn it will weap as the wall of the res flex's and distorts the surface the seal tightens to, and weaps more the tighter you go. could be bad O ring seals I replaced both sides with bitspower fittings and no leaks.

from what I have read over the internet it seems these units are prone to leaks and I havnt experienced the CPU block leak as yet.

EK support seemed good when I contacted them about the pump outlet leaking on the first leak and offered a return, but I asked if they would send the part so I can repair myself, which they said they would do. hasn't arrived yet though.

But I have to say after many reports of this leaking and seems it can happen anytime I have lost faith in the predator AIO system's the concept is good but for the price you expect no leaks and defiantly no cracks to pump outlets and flexy res side walls. now I feel I have to check daily before switching on my PC to make sure its not sprung another leak.

And looking at the box for the predator 280 it says revision 1 and I only purchased in November from OCUK, I thought all the revision 1's were supposed to of been recalled and dealt with by EK.

So as of today I have decided to do my own cooling loop as I used to do. I just don't want to be checking every day to see if another leak has developed.

Good luck with your custom loop, i processed some RMA's this weekend for the last of the EK equipment. Hopefully soon i will be back up and running without a hitch (fingers crossed).

Going to keep it simple with a Corsair H115i for the CPU and a Kraken G10 (360mm rad) for the GPU.

I spoke to soon, the EK240 CPU has leaked! The 360 (now used for GPU only) was (and still is) fine for months. Time to return....

edit: and a very painless RMA with overclockers - kudos.

Wow.. Hope your components are alright. Always a pleasure dealing with OCUK.

Yeah, I caught really quickly, heard a funny noise and spotted the leak. Fortunately I have a backplate on my 1080. Picked up an aircooler and everything has tested ok.

I know its not a true reality of the world and I KNOW people only post when things go wrong.

But I am getting a bit of a worrying feeling of all those people I have IRL suggested "if your going to use a AIO at least go with an EK they know what they are doing"

Just got that horrible lump in my stomach that someone is going to ring me at some point and bend my ear off.

erk.

Do a google search, its a bigger problem then a lot of people realise. Even after the first recall. If i was to suggest an AIO i would say Corsair all the way.

Don't get me wrong they look the bee's knee's they really do but that is just not enough.

Is there a bad batch at ocuk?Went through EK myself.Replacement so far so good but these stories are worrying.

There was the other week, might of been replaced with newer stock. EK know of the problem so i assume coolers from them should have a better chance.

Ive used a few Alphacool and Silent Loop AIOs, not a leak in them. only problem was with china underfilling a bit and tightening the compression fittings so I couldn't replace them . Seem AIO compression have spanner prong tool to tighten them so hard it cant be undone.

Would recommend getting a Eisbaer kit and removing the piping on the GPU block and adding 8/11 with their Quick Disconnects. a lot cheaper then EK !

My 360 has been faultless to be fair, I've even change the configuration just to support 2 GPU's. The 240 was untouched, the only thing I can think of was it was a in a 900D case and *maybe* the stress on the connections cause an issue - the tubes are not the longest. But it looks a o-ring failure :(

I love the concept of QDC - having had custom watercooled for many years. Maybe a bit of tweaking is in order from EKWB.

Yeah the concept is there, i couldn't even get a contact between the cpu/heatsink in the end. Very strange.

I had the 360 on CPU and two GPU's, which was just to much for it. So got the 240 and the temps were were absolutely fine - so obviously had a good contact (2011 cpu). The bugger just leaked everywhere.

Stuck with big ugly aircooler for now!

Did the components survive?

Yeah i feel ya, i tried to google it and ask around not really a common problem the CPU not getting proper contact. I did have some hope at one point were i was told removing the washers would give me that little room i needed but unfortunately did not work. Ahh well my lesson is well learnt i wont be dealing or purchasing from EK again but of course i understand some people have had no problems at all which is good i don't wish what happened to me on anyone.

Very strange.I installed mine on a z170 first with no contact issues and moved it over to an x99 again with no issues.Very unlucky.

Must have avoided this batch then

Reply from EK:

Thank you for contacting us.
I'm really sorry to hear about the reported problem.

You are correct, this should not be happening, but sadly we received a bad batch of material from our raw material provider and now some of the units that are already on the market are leaking. We sincerely apologize for that

Anyone with leaks whats ur revision/batch number?

Refund from a different supplier after having a 360 leak before Christmas.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place now, as I'll need to go back to the Predator line-up for QDC purposes. Currently using a 240 model in it's place, but it's really not quite up the level needed for CPU+GPU, accosutically speaking anyway.
Might just have to wait for new stock, with hopefully better levels of QC.
