Hi folks,

Playing around with my new 144hz monitor and totally sold coming from my old 60hz, definitely tell the difference. However not so sure over 100hz if I can tell the difference so wondering if any of you guys run a 144hz monitor at a lower refresh rate.

My thinking behind this is primarily to reduce the load / noise on the gpu. Obviously this would mean that v-sync will be triggered but am I right in saying the lag between v-sync at 60hz and 100hz is different?

I dont think that reduce any load on the GPU? It will compute all the FPS it can and the monitor will display what it can. You would need to force the GPU to only render at 100hz and I think that would be tricky.

My card gives me "140fps whatever" even when im on my 60hz monitor. Only it can only display 60fps.

some may use slightly lower for colour reasons also.get slightly better quality image.on some monitors. wouldnt drop below 120hz tbh.

I use mine at 120Hz. Mostly for two reasons

1)144Hz used to cause high idle clocks (not even sure if it still does).
2)Strobing mode. Have to be in 120/100Hz for it to work and many games just take the desktop refresh. Leaving it in 120Hz is easier than making a profile/manually switching for every game I want to use it on.

My two monitors are 144HZ & 100Hz. However I tend to globally limit games to 75 fps as that to me is smooth enough and it means the display will always be able to draw the screen in plenty of time. One has G-Sync but the other has no active syncing but doesn't suffer tearing in this configuration with a high end GPU that can maintain that 75 fps in most games (or the games I play on it).

Limiting the fps does also reduce the GPU temp/load and overall power usage if that matters but for me 75 fps is good enough and so why waste the extra power on frames I'm not bothered about or are mostly discarded in the GPU output stage.

So to recap I leave the monitors at a high refresh but limit games. The desktop definitely benefits from the high refresh rate monitors for smoothness etc.

I use rivatuner to cap the FPS in some games (e.g. on Skyrim you need to do this otherwise the physics spaz out once you go over a a certain amount of FPS). About 70-80fps seems to be the spot where it's still smooth but temperatures are noticeably lower.

You 1) still exist, the only reason my desktop sits at 120 instead of 144/165. Though i set NVCP to run wild and go 144 when playing games.
It's also been a good 2-3 years that this problem has been reoccurring, dont know why they just cant fix it already

I run at 144 now the nvidia drivers work properly then fps cap at 120 in games to avoid vsync or fast sync. I've only had to reduce refresh rate for dark souls 3 due to it not liking the 144 setting on desktop.

Your card idles at the correct frequency? On the desktop running 144hz? What drivers are you using?

G-Sync/FreeSync options which match your framerate to your monitor refresh rate without input lag/stuttering and tearing as a result of using vsync on/off

If you are playing a game such as cs:go you can manually set the fps limit using fps_max in console.

It would be pretty handy if Nvidia added more options regarding the refresh rate in the profiles. The only options are 'highest' or 'app controlled'. Some games dont allow you to select a refresh rate, such as Bioshock infinite.

I run my main monitor at 120hz, when i first got the new 480 it said 144hz was unavailable despite the card being miles better than the old GPU (7950), whereas on the old one i had it set at 144hz with no issue.

It didn't really bother me though since i rarely play CSGO anymore, which was the reason i got a 144hz in the first place. Regarding above post, my second monitor is running at 60hz.

I don't notice the difference at 100+FPS, only under 100. I think if I looked carefully I might be able to notice between 100-120FPS but I'm usually too focused on playing rather than looking for any slight disturbance.

I did used to run at 144Hz but again, I didn't really feel the benefit so reduced it to 120Hz.

Turn vsync off. Set the monitor to its highest settings.
If you have AMD card, go to control panel and set either per game or universal the fps limit cap you want

If you have NVidia use rivatuner.

What card you have, what are your temps and does your case has positive or negative airflow?
Assuming you do not have any 290x reference model, the significant majority of the other coolers are more or less relative quiet.
