VW's aren't what they used to be, hell german cars aren't in general. There are some very good alternatives for that money. I run an old diesel vag to work, but the 1.9tdi bulletproof lump, but i'd not have another german car now, back to Honda I go after this.

KWHAAT?!?!

Jokes aside, I drive mine like a monkey and have done over 7k in the 6 and a bit months I have had it and it seems fine. What exactly is the problem with the valves?

They block up causing the car to drop into limo mode, most can be cleaned the VW water cooled hobby can't most can be easily replaced the VW buried on the back of the engine one can't, most are reasonably cheap the VW water cooled one isn't

Surely warranty would cover most issues with models this age?

Yes but it's a heads up that if it goes a week after warranty your picking up the bill and then they go again and again etc etc

I know somebody who had this problem with a T5 Van, Fortunately it was only the single turbo version so replacement wasn't that awkward or time consuming. The part was jolly expensive however.

There are also problems with the electronics package on the EGR valve. Poor seals in the mechanism allow corrosive exhaust gasses to condense on the circuit board causing bizarre intermittent faults with multiple, seemingly unrelated fault codes (Basically, the faulty ERG circuit interferers with the supply line for a number of other unrelated sensors) long before any obvious mechanical issues arise.

The severity of switching to limp mode should not be understated. It can be alsmost as abrupt as switching the engine off at speed and is prefectly capable of precipitating an accident if the following drivers arent on the ball (Remember, sudden deceleration but with no brake lights to warn following traffic)
