I've never really watched much star trek. I caught a few episodes of TNG a few years ago as a teenager, and I generally found them interesting, but I know nothing of the lore so I probably wasnt getting much out of them.

I've now acquired the complete original series for stupid cheap and I'm looking forward to getting my geek on and getting into star trek. I know TOS is old so it's probably going to be difficult to get into it, but I'm confident it's going to be enjoyable.

This thread is pretty pointless but I felt compelled to share for some reason lol.

You can watch TOS in any order as stories don't go over a series (or years)

Series 1 & 2 of TOS was great. 3 was awful.

For TNG you do need to watch the episodes in order (generally you do, but not always as some are seperate to main plotline, and have no story arc outside of that episode) Voyager, Enterprise, DS9.

Binge watch the original series (try and get the remastered edition) its not the best but it did have some lovely episodes, then do the next generation (remastered edition if you can) the issue is once you get through that lot you will have no choice but to do deep space nine, voyager and then enterprise and then the entire film series !

I recommend the remastered edition since it clears up the visuals and CGI much but its not 100% important really both TOS and TNG have it only. You can also fast forward through the start and end credits to knock off 5 minutes of the episodes.

By the time you have done all of that you will be just in time to watch the next trek series in 3 months time:)

knew what number 1 was before getting to it :)

One of my favourite episodes is TNG:Conspiracy. It was banned initially for being too graphic. I remember there were still complaints when it was aired on BBC2.

Awesome. It's always great to spend an afternoon, geeking out to some sci-fi.
I recommend starting with Episodes 4-7. Then if you fancy 1-3.
Then going totally Rogue. ;)

But been serious.
"Mav" suggestion of Series and Movies, is in chronological order (ie, how events happen in Star Treks calendar, not the order when they where filmed and released.)

Enterprise 1-4 (100 Years after First Contact.)
TOS 1-3 (170~ Years after First Contact. 70 Years after founding of the Federation.)
TNG (240~ Years after First Contact.)
DS9 + Voyager (3-5 Years after TNG?)

A great word of advice. While Enterprise + DS9 + Voyager are all great shows, the early seasons can be slow, but enjoyable...
But please don't give up on these series prematurely. They have some of the best Trek story arks in later seasons... So worth the wait.

Happy Trekking. :D

When you're done with TNG, pop on Babylon 5 for a "trek break" and marvel at how many idea's were stolen from it for DS9 ;)

I only mention it as i'm rewatching the entirety of B5 with my wife right now, she finally gave in and agreed to watch. After only watching the "WHAM!" episodes of season 1, we're into season 2 and she's utterly addicted.

Don't get me wrong, DS9 is an excellent series but it's quite well known that paramount/warner were going to do B5 as a Star Trek series in the first instance, then Paramount backed out at the last minute and then launched DS9.

EDIT: I should state I love Star Trek as well in most of it's forms, enterprise is terrible, just B5 never get's the recognition is deserves.

Well, I'm 10 episode in now lol. I'm going in production order.

On the whole, I'm really enjoying it, though a few episodes have been pretty terrible (mudd's women is one example).

I really enjoyed the dog dressed up as an alien creature in "The Enemy Within". That had me in tears though I guess that was not its intended effect lol.

The fight scenes are incredible. Is that how people had fights in the 60s? :O

The pacing is also very very slow which can be frustrating. Sometimes nothing happens for like 3 minutes and they just cut between shots of different peoples faces or shots of the enterprise from various angles :S

I think I'll probably get burnt out at some point before the end, as whilst it is genuinely enjoyable, I think some of the flaws (or quirks) will grind me down, if so, I'll get TNG on blu ray :)

I'd do Enterprise last, same as they aired. There is no need to know what happened in it before watching the rest. It's also least jarring to go from best CGI to worst, to okay and then well improved in DS9/Voyager. But ultimately for me Enterprise has the most episodes you can skip through large parts or entire episodes. There are weak eps in the other series but Enterprise has by far the most irritating characters and many terrible episodes. ANything with the comms chick, the English dude and 90% of Tepal's stuff is dire.

Don't mention the Theme Tune :)

You will have to fast forward through the start and end credits especially if you are binge watching trek overall.

Yeah the method mav suggested is excellent but not 100% required, enterprise is kinda weird especially the way it ended since it was a classic TNG episode, so one could watch the normal order it aired if you wish.

Films are great but you could easily watch the lot later on, you mention harry mudd as a boring episode, it sure is but they do mention him in the rebooted trek film ;)

You would only catch these tiny things if you got your full geek on with the entire trek, but I reckon its worth while even if it takes 6 or 12 months to get through the lot !

There is a pretty cool podcast series called Mission Log where the two hosts are covering each episode of Trek (currently up to TNG season 5), might be an interesting accompaniment - linky.
