Have an MSI GTX970 here Serial number states '1409' and should have a 3 year warranty so covered with that as far as I can see.

Was playing GTAV system completely shut down in an instant, then when restarting would only go to a Gigabyte BIOS style splashscreen 'Gigabyte Ultra Durable 5' or simialr and none of the key promts on it work, apart from Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart (so USB is working)

PC boots with GPU removed (using it now)
Mbo is a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H

Have another PC I can maybe check the card in tomorrow, if it has the right PSU connections, otherwise things to check?

Fans spin up on it with it connected but no output/system won't boot.

Could be, it is powering the rest of the system fine now though and is not under great load; Corsair H80i, single SSD, PSU is a 700W Cooler Master Unit.

All I can think to do on the PSU is swap the modular cables over to another ouput and try that?

sounds like a dead GPU.
try unplug/plug the card back on the PCI-e port.
but since you have another PC just start there, if it doesnt work then it's dead, if ir does work, try different cable/display output, check if the system finds the card, check bios to disable onboard graphic, etc...

CHeck it in the other pci-e slots, they've been known to fry leaving everything else fine now and then. I was guessing you were using igpu now but if you're using a spare GPU that probably rules that out. Also yeah, try a different port on the psu if there is another. That's probably about it in terms of reasonable amount of testing before being sure enough to RMA imo. You could try someone else's system if you know anyone else who also builds their own computer and is close enough to not be a hassle.

Thanks,

I tried it in a different PCIE slot, no joy.
The backup is the inbuilt GPU (i5 CPU) So can't confirm the PCIE slot is still alive, but can try the GPU in another machine.
Will try the other PSU power connector just in case.

But it feels like it is dead :(
Will I get a cheeky upgrade through the RMA process you think or just someone elses old already refurbed 970?

Check different PSU first. And you have said if you tried to run the system without the card but with the igp only

ok then the 970 is done. Try it first on another machine, and if is not working still, and is in warranty go through the RMA process.

Is not even 2 years old card. Surely still has some warranty left even if you bought one of the first ones out.

I must be a mega numpty or mega lucky!

Tried the card in a different machine, it worked, but the fans didn't spin on it?
Realised the BIOS on my machine was waaay out of date (thought it was the latest but no) flashed that to latest, reinstalled the card and it worked, but the first time it booted it hung on this screen for ages, but before it hung on it indefinitely. Working fine now, fans included, and gaming away as normal. Put it down to PSU glitch+BIOS hickup all at once...

screen looked like this: (but mine was version 5 not 3)
