NVIDIA’s Interest in GeForce Founders Edition Graphics Cards Continues To Grow–Will Be Competing Wit

NVIDIA planning to take a bite from the market share of its own AIBs in 2017, Founders Edition graphics cards will continue to be made

The company plans to continue its foray into self-manufacturing a complete GeForce graphics card in 2017 (NVIDIA is primarily a chip designer and has traditionally supplied the GPU to AIBs who then build their own graphics card). Since the market has a limited size, it basically means that any additional profit NVIDIA makes from its Founders cards will have to come from the market share of their AIBs. Needless to say this will affect their profitability and I assume they wont be too happy about this.

NVIDIA’s attempt at re-branding its reference series lineup into something much more palatable for the average prosumer started with the Founders Edition lineup of graphics cards. The primary reason was of course to increase their sales in a DIY PC market that has been continuously on the rise (not to be confused with the OEM PC market). AIBs have been enjoying this growth in terms of increasing sales and a market that is shifting towards the high end as is evident by the impressive sales figures of the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080.

FE is overpriced, noisy and doesn't cool very well. It doesn't even lead on aesthetics, at least imo. They'll need to do a better job to get my money.

Reading between the lines this seems to confirm a new card will be out this year.

From what I've read it seems that it's not really any better than the Nvidia reference cards it replaced.
It'd be interesting to see what they came up with if they did there own aftermarket cooler but it seems that isn't their intent.

The Pascal Founders Edition variants of the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 were more expensive than the custom variants but still managed to be wildly successful.
I'm sure it was when people struggled to get their usual choice card due to low stock.

I wonder if the 1080ti will only be available from Nvidia?

That would ruffle a few feathers,I'm sure it would also make Nvidia only Brands like Zotac and EVGA consider expanding their product range.

NVIDIA have no competition, even if AMD had higher performing products NVIDIA would still outsell them 10:1, due to brand loyalty. (It happened in previous generations when AMD had the better card).

So NVIDIA are free to do whatever they please, pretty much. Expect FE cards to be the norm, eventually I'd expect only FE cards to be available - they won't need the custom cards to compete with AMD, since AMD have long given up the high end scene.

Hmm conspiracy theory hat on... Nvidia could potentially hold back supplies of boards to partners while they fill shelves with their FE cards to take up the initial surge of sales, many people with weak wills wont wait too long for aftermarket options!

This is only partially true, myself i have a 1070 but i will buy an AMD card next when Vega is released as i have a Freesync screen. I know 2 other people in my exact same situation who will also be going back to AMD due to Freesync screens.

Infact i think i know more people with Freesync screens now than G-Sync ones.

You are correct though, many people just perceive Nvidia as superior, even if AMD had the better product they would still be hard pressed to take massive market share from Nvidia, i think the only way we will see a seismic change to this is if Nvidia shoot themselves in the foot majorly in some fashion, like Cards exploding and burning peoples houses down type of deal, unless that happens it will be business as usual.

Maybe or maybe it was first come first served from a limited supply and they are first, Then, like you said the usual slew of buyers who can't wait won't wait. So Nvidia didn't really do well because people wanted the Founders version they did well because people wanted one of the long awaited 16nm graphics cards and they wanted it now. That then allows them to chalk it up as win, That's pretty fracking sad for us.

The only downside with freesync is you have to be careful and get the right monitor as some are not much kop. I returned 2 before managing to get a good one secondhand, For a lot of them the problem is the working range which isn't an issue with G-sync panels as it works with whatever the panels range is. A lot of freesync panels have fairly small ranges and when you buy a 144hz freesync monitor you don't want it too only have a 40 to 90 working range.

Mind you, wccftech, so usual salt required.

Ehh, that was the entire point of the Founders Edition - to have high quality reference card available for the entire lifetime of the product so system builders don't have to continuously change part numbers and go through extensive re-testing and driver + firmware changes etc. This isn't news, Nvidia said this when pascal was released.
It would only be news if Nvidia stopped doing this, which they might because AIBs's aren't super happy. Nvidia tried ot make the IAB's happy by charging a premium for the NVidia reference/FE cards so the AIBs could undercut, or be competitive on pricing despite having better coolers.
