** RX 480 8GB: BLOODY SILLY PRICE - £199.99 Inc. VAT!! **

This is the issue with you lot you make me want to buy it :) I have a GTX970, the RX480 is something of a side-grade but the DX12 support is pretty damn good.

With a 144hz display my only reservation is whether it can push the FPS that high on ultra settings compared to my GTX970.

I went from a 970 gaming to the 480 gtr because I fancied a "play" with summat new and it deffo is a sidestep. Saying that, I find do find it a bit quicker with the latest drivers, but you'd have to run fraps and synthetic benchies to notice.

In hindsight worth the sidegrade? I did think about two of these in CF as it would be less than a 1070 Strix etc :)

Well I made the choice with both eyes open and did the research required, and after selling a few bits of older gear, plus the original 970, the 480 virtually cost about £30-£40 to buy.
I think Nvidia might have shot the themselves in the foot wrt Sli in that you can't Sli any 1060 (the 480's direct competitor) which means you have to buy either a 1070 or 1080 to get more performance. If you Xfired a coupla 480 cards, you'd probably be looking at better performance than a single 1080. Now, if game producers and the gpu manufacturer got their acts together and supported more games in Xfire, then 2 x 480 is deffo an alternative to a 1080 and a about £150 cheaper, give or take.:)

Very good pricing on these indeed. I just bought one as I returned my 1070 for a refund after getting tired of switching over the Hz from 144 to 120 just to keep the idle temps down.

I also missed freesync and I couldn't decide on a gsync monitor.

I will pass this card on to a waiting family member when Vega arrives. :D

I still wouldn't call a 970 to a RX480 an 'upgrade'. You'll have to wait for Vega for that.

Splitting hairs here, lets start with some basic facts, more memory(always good), superior DX12, faster in more benchmarks, also 480 is up there with some 980 benchmarks, end of the day it's down to if he thinks the money is worth what he is expecting out of the card, he could wait for Vega but then that is not going to be cheap.

Yes you can argue not a major upgrade, a slight upgrade would be reasonable.

Yeah each to his own. I still say 970 - rx480 a sidegrade and should be avoided. £200 for 5%-10 more performance in some games, 5% less performance in others is not an attractive option to me (Doom being the exception, though it's one game..).

Also remember that Vega is launching soon, which is a brand new architecture. RX480's (Polaris) will then be 'last generation' cards. Plus don't expect Vega to only be the flagship cards. AMD have already said that there will be a full product stack launch for Vega, meaning we'll see a mid range RX480 replacement etc. We just don't know which cards are launching on release yet.

IMO, RX480 = awesome upgrade for cards like the 7970 and older.

If you're on a 290, 290X, 390, 390X, 970/980, then wait for Vega (or buy a 1070/1080/titanX now). Extremely likely we'll have a 1070 performance model for £300 or so, once initial price gouging is over. Probably a 1080 performance model for £450-500, again once initial price gouging is over. Probably a 16GB flagship for £800+ that will be the 1080ti competitor.

I feel that if AMD price these any higher than that, they just won't sell, as NVIDIA mindshare is so rampant. There are armies of posters on this very forum already salivating over the prospect of Vega failing etc, that are eager to start posting their negative comments if so much as a screw is the wrong colour on the reference cooler :p

Been waiting for the 8gb version to go to £200 for an upcoming Ryzen build, but not entirely convinced with the stock cooler. Not really willing to pay any more than that so do I go 8GB reference or 4GB nitro?

Currently using an r9 280x at 1920x1200 with a view to go 1440p with the new build. Can't see 4k or VR on my hit-list any time soon.

The 480 isn't up to 1440p tho. 4GB or 8GB it's a 1080p card.

1440p at 40FPS is not a "1440p card". Any card with that label I'd expect to do 60FPS+ on High details.

Does the 8gb really make much difference at 1920x1200 (or is it likely to in the short-mid term future)? My 1440 requirement isn't a definite yet, depends on budget.

I bought the 4GB Sapphire non-ref soon after release. It was £200 like these ref 8GB cards. I knew it would only be for 1080p, and I knew come Vega I'd upgrade to an 8GB card. In all the reviews the difference at 1080p between the 4GB and 8GB was practically nothing. So saving £50 was a no-brainer.

At then some time in the future I'll be after a 1440p, 100Hz Freesync screen. I'll need 8GB for that, no question.

Big gain in FPS with RE7, see benchmarks in OcUK gaming forum, end of the day 8GB will last longer if you are going to keep it awhile.

I had a fault with my 1070 and was given a full refund after owning it since August. With Vega not far off, I opted for a 480 to tide me over till then and I like it very much especially due to freesync which I thought I didn't miss.

It runs the latest games very well with a small compromise on some settings at 1440p.

It would have been nice if ocuk did a freesync monitor deal at the same time for people who haven't experienced it yet.

I know the XFX GTR is a good card but I do feel people are getting a bit carried away with the reputation this card seems to garner.

I don't rate or want it if I was buying due to it's "rep". I would not buy this card due it's OC rep, as that is a "silicon lottery" I may or may not win ;) .

It just a matter of how the card is as a product :) . Listed in order of likeness or value to me:-

i) GPU core is not drawing power from PCI-E slot like on ref PCB.
ii) VRM components are nice, I like the metal casing IR direct fets due to spec, etc.
iii) 8 pin PCI-E plug more than ample for some OC exploits.
v) Nice dual fan cooler and backplate.

Unless the higher clocked versions of the XFX are cheaper or same price as the RS version I'd be happy just to get that TBH, as don't think the higher clocked ones guarantee a better chance at "silicon lottery".
