New Toyota Supra set for 2018 !

But the GTR can fight against higher model 911's, the potential Supra/Z5 will be at max something against the 718 Cayman.

Z5 maybe but the Supra was Toyota's flagship GT Car. The MR2 Turbo of that era was more your Cayman/Z5 class of car.

It seems from reading the article that it will just be a platform share with the Z5 which lets be honest the Z series of cars have never been drivers cars. :(

I am a little surprised Toyota needed to go to BMW tbh (Unless it is the other way around). They are the bigger company after all and after the magnificent LFA surely they could have used that technology to make a sports car for the masses. Do not like the idea of it having a BMW engine in it either. There is no such thing as a hot Toyota without an engine developed by Yamaha.

The fast and furious era Mk4 Supra had a German developed engine (2JZ-GTE) it was the late 80's Mk3 one (and later the Soarer) that had the Yamaha developed one (1JZ-GTE). NB Germans also made the 6 speed gearbox in the manual Mk4.

Just re release the MKIV, throw your new improved engine in and job done, instant winner. UNLESS they're going all eco with some 4pot then yeah...don't bother Toyota.

BMW and Toyota have been working on the car together.

BMW will release a softop version and call it a Z4. Toyota the same car in hardtop as a Supra.

Seems like a win-win for everyone tbh.

tbf id be happy with a big winged gt86 with a 2jz as a supra replacement :D. Perhaps with some electric power instead of twin turbos

Will be like the new nsx. Totally average low end hybrid super car that can only just outperform the nearly 10 year old Nissan gtr but still cost 2x as much zzzzzzzz.

Also will not live upto its legendary name. :( concorde was the peak of airliners and now cars have peaked and are coming back down to unreliable pieces of crap. The only difference is the newer cars are designed to break whereas old cars broke because they didn't know how to make them last. Lol.

We don't know that yet. One area of the market BMW don't have 15 different cars in or compete with Merc in is*a range of two*seated cars. This is why there is/was a rumour of multiple possible Z models at different price points. So there could be a z1 z3 z5. Or they could make a new z4 then ignore it and not put a V8 in it :(

i like the sound of that, especially if they do say a z6 with a v8 and a z1/2 as an mx5 competitor?

would be nice to have more options for this kind of thing.

I can see them doing it as its the one area they don't have a*selection of cars. Similar to how they have expanded the X series. Anything from an MX5 competitor up to 911's.

That or*they*will make a 4 series estate or something instead. *

That is incorrect the 2JZ was developed in house by Toyota with help from Yamaha for cylinder heads. Yes Toyota has its Motorsports division in Germany but that's where the similarities end (or where the confusion could arise).

The 1JZ-GE and the 2JZ-GE were developed in house by Toyota, when they decided they wanted some performance turbocharged models they opted to outsource development. The 1JZ-GTE was developed by Yamaha for use in the Mk3 Supra, and later the Soarer plus others. And the 2JZ-GTE was developed by Johann A. Krause Maschinenfabrik GmbH of Germany for use in the Aristo (Lexus GS) and later the Mk4 Supra plus others.

The most obvious differences between the 1JZ-GTE and 2JZ-GTE are the displacement, the turbochargers used, and the configuration (the 2JZ using a sequential arrangement). However there are many smaller differences too. There's loads of info on it on site like mkivsupra.net if you're interested.

That would be nice, but seeing they seem to be moving towards putting electric motors and turbos on everything these days, and making that 2 series mpv thing, im starting to lost hope that any new z cars are going to be good ol big n/a in a tiny car.

However i say that with absolute hope that i'll be proved wrong.

You believe everything that is written on the Internet?

Agreed.

I want the RX9 to be real.

If an RX9 did come out I can't see it selling very well. As everyone knows that the prices of the RX8 dropped like a stone...

For example I paid £3500 for my 2006 RX8 back in 2011 or 2012 so it was only around 5 years old and it had only done 32,000miles

That concept Supra looks amazing. It's futuristic and mad looking at the same time. It will likely end up looking like a smaller and muscular LF-A in the real world though.

Which is no bad thing.

The best concept that I've seen of the Supra is one Jalopnik referenced in this article and below. It's not official, but I can see it, a tad more realistic than the concept from several years ago in the OP.
