Depressing, yet beautiful movies...

Pans Labyrinth.
Lives of Others.

Depressing but not sure about beautiful: Requiem of a dream. It's like free fall down jacobs ladder..

Lilya-4-Ever

It's a subtitled film but one of the best I've ever seen. Not seen it for years now so unsure what effect it would have on me but it did hit me quite hard about 10 years ago.

Some powerful films, in here. Have added some that I've missed to my 'to watch' list.

Would like to add A Monster Calls. It's got some fantastic visuals and excellent acting with a moving story and had me tearing up at the end.

Was meant to check it out tomorrow at my local but it's no longer showing :(

The Revenant, a really really average film elevated only by beautiful scenery and great cinematography. It's depressing to me in that it is really just style over substance and has no re-watch value at all. I think only truly great films make you want to watch them over and over again.

I dunno, I've watched a lot of great films that I've loved but don't want to see again. In my opinion the Revenant is not a great film nor one I want to see again. I will never understand the hype around the release of it - other than the bear scene, the dramatic scenery & sense of futility, it brings nothing as a story that I could emotionally connect to.

We Need To Talk About Kevin.

Very true, I ended up buying this film and now think if I recommend/lend this film to friends/family they are going to think I am a manic depressive/loon. ;)

Even I doubt myself whether I would watch again unless on TV.

It's hard to describe this film given it's subject, just very captivating.

Sorry should have added to my last post, only thinking of other films which fall into this category:

The Hunt

Mads Mikkelsen, not comfortable viewing however goes to show rumours spread - Very dark.

The Hunter

William Dafoe. Purchased purely by chance, the story is intriguing and personally gripping.

The American

I think this is one of George Clooney's best films. Another slow-burner, I always recommend and quickly get pooh-pooed by those who do not share my opinion - b'ah.
