So my brother was involved in a very serious accident in his Clio 182 which wasn't his fault. Having since recovered and now being in a position to drive again , he is keen for a new motor.

7k hot hatch - best he can get really. He doesn't have kids so doesn't need 4 doors necessarily although every French car he has had had gone wrong one way or the other
 
7K would get a very nice one. Had a quick look and ~35-40k miles is a reasonable expectation for that budget. Be a few from main dealers at that price range too.
 
Well sorted MX-5, I know its not a hatch but I'm coming round to the opinion they are more fun on the road, this might be considered sacrilege but as an owner of a EP3 its hard to fully enjoy it as you pick up speed too quickly and there is little fun watching your speed all of the time.

That said as a hot hatch I fully endorse the EP3 civic and 7k would get you a mint condition one, not as many toys or as comfortable as the FN2 but more fun to drive IMO.
 
Something like a R53 Cooper S or 3 MPS would be under budget and still fit the requirements. Although the latter is starting to look a little dated now (no offense to some owners here)
 
Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback 2.0 petrol. Less than £7K, so spend a bit on a remap, Evo X intercooler, braided brake lines and decent pads.

Hey presto....Japanese, all the mod cons, 300bhp, four seats, four doors and a hatchback.

Slippery slope though, as I have found out. :D :D :D
