Question regarding the above.

I know I can call and ask but would rather know before I start, do dealers/garages buy cars for more money and allow trade in on a cheaper car?

At the weekend I got my Mum a new car, most were offering £2500 part exchange for hers.

So I did a Webuyanycar valuation, they quoted £3365, I then filled it in again declaring NO MOT and "some" service history, dropped the price to £3200.

So went their, they test drove it which was literally out the space and reversed back in. Paint depth checked all panels and went around the car noting all scratches.

In the end they offered £2898, I said make it 3k and deal, they said £100 up is max they can do, £2998, took it, cash was transferred there and then.

Yes could have got £500 more privately, but would have had to MOT it and two of the tyres were nearing the limit so it would have cost about £300 to put right then dealing with tyre kickers coming round, no thank you.

Very easy transaction and then just went to buy the car she liked most paying outright in cash. :)

I'm shocked you got so much from we buy any car for her Focus  They are always way off for me taking into accout my last 2 cars they offered 3.2k for my Focus ST225 which I just sold for 4.2k and my old ST220 they offered 1.4k but I sold it for 2.6k

I had a similar WBAC experience to Gibbo just this weekend.

Gearbox exploded on my Ibiza - impossible to find a replacement from breakers, so the only option was to go direct to Seat for a new or refurbished one. Ended up being quoted the thick end of £3,000 to get it sorted.

Difference in WBAC quote between a fully working Ibiza and one needing a new gearbox? £500.

I'd definitely consider them again purely from how easy the whole process was. Sure they will try and knock you down, but if you describe the condition honestly and stand your ground you will get very, very close to their quote.

Never realised WBAC and the likes paint depth checked cars.

Yes I was shocked by that and also got a bit miffed about him pointing out every little mark on the car.

I said it is 7yr old car, its not brand new and anyone expecting to buy it won't be put off or even probably notice the odd stone chips and faint marks as one would expect it for a car more than 5yr old.

He just said it is the process, but in the end I was expecting it to reduce the price by £100's but it did not, so not end of the world. But remember that when selling to them, whatever price the computer tells them, they can personally add some more on. :)

WBAC offered £450 for our Fiat Bravo (2007) last week.
Advertised on AT for £1500 and it went for £1300 less than 4 days later.

Generally WBAC is the low end of trade as they'll usually just auction your car. Whatever they pay needs to be less than what they'll get at auction.

None of this is really relevant to the OPs question though (the answer is yes - you could trade in a £10k car for an £8k car and 'walk away with' £2k cash).
