Here we go! (Jaguar/Shell fuel app)

So, they're just embedding the app which already does this into the car?

Meh. Seems a bit of something out of nothing, it wont catch on.

I'll admit it sounds useful, but theres so much in the way of the connected world to sort out (like telling apple to wise up and use normal bluetooth, why i cant get my alarm to not go off when i'm driving and why google voice control cant tell the difference between "sonata arctica" and "some other arctic" no matter how much "talking to a computer" voice you employ) i dont feel this is top of the list

Edit, also after the number of typing errors it'd be nice to have a touchscreen keyboard with tactile buttons, or dictating software that worked

The problem will be, just like the app, its not quite as easy as they say, fill up and go, you have to stop, scan the barcode (if the garage even has it, as many dont) tap in your amount, authorize it if required... then fill up. Honestly its easier to go in and pay.

Or just use Pay@Pump as we have been doing for years, it's not as if you can just sit in the car and let the pump do the refuelling for you, you need to get out of the car, so why not just use the pinpad?

My wife got caught out with that shell fuel up app, she'd forgotten her handbag so had no means to pay 'no worries!' she thought 'i've got he shell app!' but yeah... no bar codes available as they'd apparently taken them down a while ago  and it just didn't work for her in the end.

But yeah if shell could get the pay at pump things working on ANY of the ones in north wales i'd be wayyyy happier than them messing around with useless stuff like this :p

I wonder how long it will be before Shell/Jaguar do some sort of sordid deal that ensures that you can ONLY fill up your Jag at Shell stations?

(EG, A chip recognition system that will not allow a fuel pump nozzle to be inserted unless it is connected to a Shell fuel pump)

I can see it coming, I really can! :(

Think you are a bit paranoid. Much as I'm a jag fan-boi, if they did that I would be shopping elsewhere come change of car time.

After the HP printer cartridge debacle, I suspect I am not paranoid enough.

I can certainly see a scheme coming in where Shell (Say) creates a scheme where the initial purchase cost is subsided in exchange for more expensive fuel.

And people will go for it too! (Like the driving app/tracker insurance thing, which fills me with horror)

As ever, something that starts out as an option will rapidly become the norm that people will have little or no option to opt out of.

Those barcodes always puzzled me as your not supposed to use your phone on the forecourt.

Nice idea as can link with mileage and expense forms. I dont really know how the technology works in the car - the new engines was far more interesting from yesterdays press release anyway.

Shell Pay App

So I saw the press release and had to download and register and of course try.

Download app on phone. Register and select Apple Pay or PayPal as method of payment.

Plug into car and you can select nearest station and start ... then error - need compatible navigation app ??!!?
Anyway forget directions I know where my nearest shell is.
Drive up, open app on car screen and it knows where you are so select the pump number and authorise an amount that you want to spend up to. No problem can do a full tank no silly limits.

Fill up car drive off. It worked.

Cashier looked at me very oddly so I had to stop and check my email - yes a receipt.

Just thought I'd share - it felt odd.

You don't have to scan any barcodes in the app. I've found the app to be excellent - super quick to fill up and pay.

Had it changed then? I used it a couple of times and gave up because it was more trouble than it was worth.

god that's a terrible trend these days, i feel sorry for the poor sods who are financially forced into using that. i was lucky enough that my parents showed the same level of tinfoil hattery as i did when it came to that.

Not sure, but I've used it for a few months. It recognises where you are now and you just need to tell it your pump number. All the Jag implementation is doing is making it available through InControl rather than your phone.

Oh thats definitely different.

Before you had to go through some ******** of scanning a QR code in "participating garages only".

Would be handy for fleet drivers if it makes the payment using fuel cards. Would save a bit of time doing it this way and a good little extra to encourage getting a Jaguar as next company vehicle choice. Fleet managers will like it as well as the mileage / vehicle will be verified.

I assume it just does what the app does and uses Apple Pay.

The car black box insurance thing is scary. All insurance companies have to do is keep inflating the price of non-tracked insurance. This will then force everybody eventually to go for a black box tracked type policy. it's happening already.

Cars and driving will be a thing of the past in 15 years.

I can do this from my car anyway, Android app on head unit works just fine.

Although I find it more convenient on the phone...
