Ive managed to bend a motherboard pin on a Z87 board for the first time in 15 years! No idea how I have managed it. Are there any tips on how to avoid this? I have no clue how I managed it either as I said built many PCs over the years.

Im not brave enough to bend back so will flog on saying bent pin for someone braver then me to repair, but any advice on how to avoid this on my replacement?

Cheers

Bending it back is easy, just be really gentle and take your time.

as for how it happened (which is effectively what you are asking) always take care when putting the CPU in the slot and put it in flat and straight in to the slot rather than getting it almost near and then letting it slide in to place.

other than that there is very little else you can do (wrong)

I managed to bend back four pins. First I used a camera which had a close up mode to examine which way the pins had been bent out of place. Then carefully pushed them back the right way one by one using a pair of small tweezers. If you have a steady hand its actually easier than you think because all the neighbouring pins are bent the same way so you know when your bent pin is back in place as it will match all the others. I would definitely do it with one.

Use a mechanical pencil so you will snap the lead before the pin, it being only one pin I'd do it myself and keep the board.

If your sure the pencil lead is non conducive, it could end in disaster if tiny bits/particles break off! Graphite is very conducive.

I've bent a pin back with a small metal pick before and it's been fine, that was on a CPU though which arrived with a bent pin. For LGA I've adjusted a pin using the same metal pick but also a piece of thread - if the pin has been crushed flat but you can still make the thread into a loop and slip it under it can be useful to lift it without trying to get your other implement between the other pins ;). A desk lamp with a bright bulb and a magnifying glass really helps too.

Is there any company that offers a service fixing bent pins on Intel motherboards? I have the same problem but the pins are really awkward to get to even when I take the mobo out of the case.

Best way to bend it back is to plug something in to it mate, gently over the top then it will line up with the other pins perfectly as you seat it... stronger than you think though so be brave ;)
