Cyclist runs red light, hit by car....

What I read elsewhere was that he admitted the "Charge" on the grounds that he agreed to attend a driving awareness course with no further action taken.

IE the Police basically said "We know you are not to blame but we have to go through the motions because Cyclist"

That's highly illegal and would be perverting the course of justice. You cannot dangle an outcome in front of someone to get them to admit to something they haven't done.

'Millionaire footballer' will have access to the best motoring lawyers who could worm their client out of pretty much anything. The fact he's accepted quite a serious 'driving without attention' charge would either lead me to believe there's more to this story, if there isn't more to this story then the footballer is a complete doughnut.

Well, the main issue as I see it is that when proceeding on a green light you are supposed to make sure it is clear and safe to do so. Had the cyclist hit the car, they would have been apportioned 100% of the blame but as the cyclist ran the light and the car drove into him, some blame fell upon the car driver, albeit minor enough to only warrant an awareness course.

He shouldn't have run the red light in the first place, end of. If you did that in a car or motorbike and someone hit you, you would get 100% of the blame and probably a ban for dangerous driving.

lack of details for sure! I doubt the driver would've been charged for dangerous driving if he simply followed the rules aka speed etc and hit the cyclist who was jumping red. I'd expect the cyclist to get full blame for it unless the driver did something - doubt any driver would even admit to dangerous driving if they were not doing anything wrong.

That's exactly my thinking too.

If i was in that position, there's no way i'd be taking a conviction of driving without due care and attention. If my lights are on green, i'm within the speed limit, and some loon suddenly cycles straight out across the road, with all the attention in the world focused on driving, i'm not sure what an alternative outcome would be.

Can only assume the driver must have been driving erratically - fast acceleration etc.

Do you realise just how hard it is to get a ban from driving?

If the cyclist ran a red light he is definitely to blame (it's hard to find an actual source), but the onus is also on the driver to check its safe to proceed. A green light is not a signal to steam ahead at whatever speed you want too. I'd find it odd that he'd accept the charge otherwise; don't you?

Former QPR star Austin said last week in a statement: “In late October 2016, I was driving in the city centre of Southampton and had stopped at traffic lights at a junction.

“I moved forward when the lights turned green and it was at that point that a cyclist unexpectedly came across my path and a collision occurred.

I suppose there were grounds to believe he should have seen the cyclist and been aware of the hazard.

Can't have been speeding so would simply be taking off from the lights without checking the junction was safe.

How come cyclists get away with everything? So many times I have seen them having a go at drivers. They always go through reds too. I swear if one ever hits me they better do a good job so that I can't get up.

You seem to be implying that he's got away with it even though he's suffered brain and spine injury? You also seem to suggest they are more often at fault than drivers. Try cycling yourself on main roads for a few miles on a regular basis. I guarantee you'll be surprised by some of the overtaking you witness amongst other things. You might also be surprised at how tiring it can be and what this does to your reactions depending on your fitness, how fast you're trying to go and your bike setup.

My car can easily break the speed limit from a stop line before exiting a junction. I suspect the type of car being driven by a footballer could too.

He hasn't 'got away with it' he's got injuries he's going to have to live with.

The problem with your analysis of 'cyclists get away with everything' is the same as my analysis that 'all people on 4 wheels are complete dumbkoffs'.

While your and I analysis might appear to be true. It isn't.

'I don't blame anyone - both Mr Austin and I were there and it seems we both made a mistake.'

-_- You ran a red light you idiot how is anyone else to blame, there is either more to the story or this is just another blame culture gone mad...
Because if you're pulling away from a red that has just turned green then you should be checking there is no traffic still coming from the other direction.

It sounds like a simple case. Cyclist gets done for skipping the red light, motorist gets done for not looking before pulling off.

I'm sure it would be a different situation if the light had been green for a while and the motorist didn't have to slow down.

So as he said, both made a mistake and both were penalized for it. The fact the cyclist was severely injured has little to do with anything, although it does make the £30 fine seem rather tenuous...!

Exactly.

The whole problem with most cyclists is that they are weak, stupid and suicidal. They just don't want to waste their precious energy on braking. They will look for ANY and ALL means to avoid braking at ALL times, even red lights come second, avoiding braking is ALWAYS top priority.

I did say "most" cyclists because I have witnessed a handful of absolute pro cyclists around. Which is why I have nothing against cycling on roads, the only problem is morons on our roads. And when it comes to cyclists there is simply a larger proportion of morons.

The cyclist was in the wrong and caused a lot of damage as a result, doing something irresponsible and just plain stupid.

This is an argument for cyclists to have some sort of insurance if they are on the roads, everything falls to the motorist and his/her insurance. Crazy.

Green light means proceed if safe and clear to do so. It obviously wasn't safe and clear to do so.............................BECAUSE OF A STUPID CYCLIST......

The cyclist is surely at fault here and has already been punished by karma. Even if the car driver wasn't paying attention, if the cyclist hadn't have broken the law going through the red light then the collision would not have happened.

I obviously wouldn't wish that on anyone but I have zero tolerance for any vehicle on the road (whether it be a bicycle, a car, whatever) running red lights. I've been hit twice in London as a pedestrian now by cyclists running red lights so you can understand my reaction. It's a shame because the majority of cyclists are actually respectful road users but that small minority of absolute selfish and disrespectful cretins tarnish their reputation with the rest of us.

Let the cyclist bashing begin. Literally every thread goes this way. What a waste of space.

To be fair so many of them invite it, I witness a disproportionate number that ride like utter idiots everyday. Overtaking a bus on the inside while it's turning, cutting across in front of me, diving through a rapidly closing gap forcing me to brake and throw my passengers around. If I hit them it's game over, if I am looking in my mirror when they act like a fool likewise.
