BT Infinity vs Virgin VIVID 200 Gamer

So fibre has final come to my street :D

BT infinity 1 is £47/month, Virgin VIVID 200 Gamer is £50/month. I'm tempted by Virgin's 20Mb upload as I host my own off -site cloud storage server. BT are quoting me at a min download speed of 28Mb, whereas Virgin is 200Mb. But which one has better reliability?
 
Not sure on which one is best but ill say this Virgin have a MASSIVE over subscription issue in all areas at the moment .There is a large thread some where on the forums and its worth a look.so when they quote 200mb you may geta lot less and there costomer service sucks when sorting it out.
 
If your not doing gaming then virgin are probably fine. If using on-line fps shooters etc then virgins latency is terrible .Went from their 300mb connection to Bt's 52mb one and difference is amazing, lower pings and great latency in all games.
If all your doing is moving files then virgins will probably be better out of peak times.

You don't necessarily need low latency to stream, as this is just a delay. You need a good upload to stream from yourself or a good download to receive stream content, however if your latency is high while streaming games, you'll struggle to play online smoothly. Movies etc should be fine.
 
If you can get BT Infinity then you can get an equivalent connection from most ISPs.

Zen are considered to be good but you do pay a premium.

Shop around for offers and check the cash back sites.
 
i have heard good things about zen regarding the pings you get with them.

I have virgin and live in an area where i always get the full speed, i say try virgin out.
 
Aslong as you're in a Virgin area that isn't over subscribed you'll get full speed and all good with no issues regarding latency or ping. If you are though you'll have issues until they finally run more cables to support the demand.
 
Oddly enough I have just switched from Infinity to Virgins VIVID Gamer 200 package.

The latency on the SH3 was horrific and led to frustration in online games.

Yesterday I got the SH3 switched for a SH2ac and it's night and day.

Overall I am now really happy with my broadband and for gaming it's perfect.

SOME areas are over subscribed. Not really correct that all areas are.

Worth asking any locals what their connection is like.

Mine is, mostly, great. :) (Had a few issues with latency with WOW the other week but seems ok now)

I'm about to give virgin a go (300mb homeworks) but can't fault BT, it just seems poor value if virgin works alright, we will see! Not cancelling BT just yet until I know virgin works alright.
 
The only sensible advice you can take is level of service, the quality / speed / latency all depend on the wire to your house and the area you live in
 
i get like 20-30ms ping to a uk server which is alright, i remember it being 5 or 10ms as i have been with coaxal cable isp for like 10 years and a bit.
 
I know a lot of areas do have serious connection ratios but i cant complain about my connection

This is my result just at peak time, my mate who lives not far from me is with sky fibre. Supposed to get 38Mbps, at peak hes lucky to get 5Mbps

 
If you want to go Virgin I would suggest checking their forum for you post code, overly congested areas tend to flag up quite a lot.
