OCuK marketing experts with a good eye, please give me your comments to my draft adverts. I'm putting up a new A4 size ad on one of the noticeboards at one of the secondary schools I teach at to 'drum' up new business. I have plenty of students currently, but things always change, particularly as new terms begin, so I like to be pro-active.

My aim here is to make the ad stand out, and catch people's attention. What do you think of the choice of fonts, sizes and colours? Does the main header need to be larger? I quite like the style of font for the header (Grilled cheese BTN Toasted size 36) but am open to suggestions.

Are there too many different font styles or do they work together? Ariel Black size 28 and Times New Roman size 28 at bottom.

Does some of the text work better in italics or keep it all straight?

Do you prefer the black, blue or orange text? Or some other colour?

Smiley face bigger or smaller?

Honestly, they all look like they were made in 1998 when clip art was all the rage.

Sorry. I wouldn't look twice at them.

No offense but that's pretty poor.

You want the image to fill the page.

Ideally a photo of somebody cool playing the drums.
Dark background if you can find one.

White text over the top

Why does the title have an underline? I don't think that's even a thing in Word docs these days.

More to the point, what are you advertising exactly? Is it a social project? Are you looking to make money?
It just screams that you are indecisive and can't put a number on how much your time is worth.

Thanks for the comments guys. No offence taken as I'm pretty rubbish at putting ads together. It does look rather 1990s. :p

Plagiarise the first two I found on Google Images -

And it isn't Drumkit Lessons you are offering.

Thanks. Love those, particularly the first one. Guess I can put it through photoshop.
Yes, drum lessons sounds better than drumkit lessons.

Technically I did have a drumkit lesson many years ago.

I signed up for some free drumming lessons as arranged by the local adult education thing. Myself and a friend turned up for the first lesson, there were maybe ten or so people there. The first thing we were taught was how to set up a drum kit.

After that, the course was cancelled.

So I never learnt how to play the drums but I did learn how to set up a drum kit. I had a drumkit lesson!

Cool story, huh?

Was this how he taught you?

Also, what's a drumkit lesson? Is it a lesson to help build / make / tune drumkits? Or is it a lesson to learn how to drum? There's a sublte difference there, but an emphatic one, none the less.

EDIT: Oh, I see I'm late again...

Well, the English could be better but I'm struggling to decided whether anyone should care, for an advert like that! (I mean this in a good way.)

If these adverts are going in a school it would be a good way to annoy the passing English teachers :p

I wouldn't worry too much OP - anyone really interested in learning the drums is probably going to contact you regardless of how flashy the advert is.

I'd personally make it a bit more 'professional', but if you think it'll be best to go with the friendly wording/smily face then go for that. E.g.

DRUMMING LESSONS

Learn drum beats for rock, jazz, r&b, hip hop, blues, pop, and more...

[Insert something about why you're the right teacher, e.g. experience, past results?]

[Insert something about (no?) experience necessary, drum kit provided, location, cost?]

Interested? Contact the Student Services Desk

Thanks for all the input guys, I've taken note of most of the things mentioned and made adjustments. I had a chat with a year 7 learning coordinator at the school today about this and she suggested that I could include a particular student I taught who won a drum competition. She reckons that will almost definitely attract interest.

What do you think of my new poster now? I started from scratch. Found a textured black template and went from there. I'll redo it again to possibly add a bit more text. The 'Drum Lessons' text needs moving to the right a bit as does the line of text under the photo to centre them.
