Racist thug who spat on baby escapes prison

What about someone with tourette's that uses a racist term as a tick?
And here yet again we have Vincent attempting to defend a minority in the wrong. Standard modus operandi.
Tourette's and schizophrenia are completely different diseases. Try again.

Not at all.

I was responding specifically to you implying that his schizophrenia couldn't cause racist behaviour. In fact that studies have shown that schizophrenia is more likely to happen to minorities who have suffered from racist discrimination, as it's a major stress factor.

There's nothing in your source that says it causes racist behaviour.

Are you now making things up by saying he's been racially abused as an attempt to defend his actions?

That would utterly pathetic.

You misunderstand.

I'm not saying 'Schizophrenia always makes you racist' - That is clearly not true.

I'm disputing what you said -
The illness might be the straw that broke the camels back but the camel is wearing a white hood and carrying a lynching rope!

Without knowing the full facts (we know he has previous convictions) we can't really state either way if he is a genuine racist or the brain disease caused him to act out of character.

Basically if the article didn't mention he was schizophrenic - And most of the right wing sites that 'reported' the story have missed out this crucial fact, I would join in the chorus about his abhorrent behaviour.

I think he's just trying to uphold an objective perspective, not bestow some bias upon the story as so many on here often do when it comes to stories like this.

I said might. You posted a completely irrelevant link that in no way refuted my point. We're not talking about the causes of any conditions he may have, we're talking about his racist actions.

As I have schizophrenia myself I'd love to hear about your deep knowledge on the subject. On the other hand you probably know nothing about it and just jumping on the guy because you don't understand what the illness can do to you. What was it you said? Oh yeah. Try again.

Are any of my assertions wrong? Can it turn you in to a violent racist completely at random without any prior racial prejudice?

Please provide links to any sources you may have rather than your anecdotal experience.

I have schizophrenia too. Been plagued by it for over twenty years. It certainly hasn't made me a racist or a bigot of any stripe. I'm a very liberal person. I just see and hear things that don't exist which at times can be very stressful indeed. Not knowing what is real and what is my illness is a cruel trick that schizophrenia plays on the mind. Thankfully my Olanzapine keeps me sane 99% of the time.

Yes. If you have persecutorary voices that attack you because of your colour it would be natural that the outcome of that would be racism since you feel like you are being racially attacked yourself. You can voices that say all kinds of things to you from really good stuff like "you are God" to really bad stuff like "kill yourself" and everything in-between. I wouldn't be at all surprised if his racism was provoked by his illness. What he did was disgusting but when you are really unwell you can easily become a threat to yourself or other people and you lose the ability to control your actions which is what is so bad about the illness it changes people who are normally very peaceful into people capable of doing the most disgusting crimes. The kindest thing to do to this guy would be to get him in hospital and well medicated. When I was in hospital there was one (white) guy who was always saying really nasty things (the n word etc) to the black staff. Hospital isn't a nice place because it is full of people who are REALLY ill and don't have the same control over their actions as people who are not ill.

I'm not surprised that there is so much hate in this thread. People just do not understand mental illness but I'm sorry about it and I wish we lived in a more understanding society.

http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/driven-mad-by-racial-abuse-1314030.html

Campbell set about a group of toddlers with a 2ft machete because he thought they were "little devils". He heard their voices taunting him, calling him "******". Christopher Clunis, known to be mentally ill, also heard voices taunting him with racist jibes. He stabbed Jonathan Zito to death in an underground station.

Last year, Stephen Laudat, a known paranoid schizophrenic released into the community without any medication, stabbed Bryan Bennett 82 times because he believed that he was was Ronnie Kray. An independent inquiry into the killing concluded that racial prejudice and poor co-operation between doctors and social workers helped turn Laudat, 26, into a violent killer.

All three were black men, tormented by real or imagined racism. In each case the authorities, through ignorance or prejudice, failed to give them appropriate treatment, and innocent people were hurt or killed.

Imagine if you heard a voice which called you a white <insert swear word> 24/7 and you thought it was black people saying it. Would that make you racist? As you have schizophrenia you know that when you hear voices you believe them 100% to be true and you can't just block them out.

I've never had voices that are in anyway connected to racism but I have had voices telling me to kill my self which lead to a suicide attempt some years ago. I came close but survived. I often get pejorative slurs and running commentary's on what I'm doing. In the moment it's very stressful and depressing. It's not till it's passed that I can reflect and say oh yeah that was my illness. At the time though it's indistinguishable from reality.
