Chickenpox and toddlers

My 5 year old has just gotten over it, not looking too bad now but one massive spot on his forehead which is almost definitely going to scar, breaks my heart a little seeing a mark on his previously perfect skin! :(

Apparently there are such things as pox parties...

I kid you not.. parents deliberately take kids to these parties to catch the pox so their kids get it over and done with.

Yep, I've heard of that, oh my kid has such and such infection, you should bring over X to get it.

I've never heard of "pox parties" but it is quite popular not to quarantine a child who has the chicken pox, but there is a good reason for that. Catching chicken pox as an infant is a mildly annoying infection / fever. Catching it as an adult can land you in hospital, therefore it is "safer" to catch it when you are young.

I've no idea why we do not vaccinate against it anyway, the vaccine is widely available.

I got chicken pox when I was about 40, fortunately the worst that I suffered was embarrassment.
I was a black cab driver in London, the spots meant that I couldn't shave, so there I was, Spotty Muldoon, with grey grizzle.
I would get hailed in the street, pull to a halt, and lower the n/s electric window, the fare would look at me, and I could imagine the words racing around in their minds, particularly women, "How the f can I say, sorry, my mistake, and walk away?"

IIRC the immune response developed from actual Chicken pox generally protects you from a range of related viruses as an adult, which can be much nastier including I believe potentially the loss of limbs in bad cases, while last I looked I don't think a vaccination did the same. So generally its much better to get it out the way as a child.

Another thread necro from a newcomer. We are in the twilight zone!

Really need a banner when old threads are bumped :( I noticed some of the posts above were 2017 and didn't think to check how old the thread was. Could be worse though - a couple of threads recently were bumped from like 2007 or something and 2010 :s

All my friends from school came round to play with me when I had chicken pox when I was about 5 or 6.

I had it in my mid twenties. I remember being covered in spots from head to foot and being sent to A+E. The last thing I remember was going to the desk, handing them a Drs note and me collapsing onto a bench. Two weeks later, I wake up in a isolation room connected to all sorts of machines having experienced some terrifying hallucinations.

The Chicken pox had gone to my lungs and then onto my brain. I was very lucky to survive. I was on life support for two weeks and had a drip and tracheotomy. About 30 people a year die from it. About a year later, someone I went to school with contracted it and had the same as I, only he didn't survive. It is very dodgy to get it later in life.

Another thread necro from a newcomer. We are in the twilight zone!

On the assumption that I am the newcomer who committed the thread necro faux pas, (necro? Was I screwing a dead thread?), I'll go stand in the corner, wearing the dunce cap.
I saw the thread title, and was reminded that I'd attended a family get-together recently, where there had been some discussion about a 3 y.o. great niece attending or not.
She had caught chicken pox, and there was a pregnant female family member who was going to be there, so other female relatives were saying that if the pregnant woman was exposed the chicken pox, it could have an adverse affect on her foetus.
I remember saying that I knew that exposure to rubella was a no-no, but hadn't heard that it was the same for chicken pox.
Naturally some of the family googled it, and google said that it was not a good idea for a pregnant woman to be exposed to it.
That's why I clicked on the thread, it didn't enter my head to see how long it had been running.

Wasn't you. I think the mods killed a spammer. The guilty post had some linky for boxing gloves.

The vaccine has been shown to prevent over 100 deaths a year from chickenpox in the USA, we are so far behind them by comparison. I would pay for my child to get the vaccine in a heartbeat.
