Is an 1070 overkill for 1080p gaming

Hi all
Looking to replace my 960, I'm currently using a 1080p monitor with an 4570
Looking at a zotac 1070 mini(not on ocuk site) or would a evga school 1060 or zotac 1060 mini be enough.
Also as the saying goes size is important so fitting a full size card would cause some issues with hard drives play skyrim, fallout 4, elite dangerous ,sniper elite

Many thanks

Honestly, there's so many things you can turn up and so many tweaks you can make, mods, etc. It's hard to say the 1070 is overkill. And that's now. But remember you aren't keeping your card for just this year (I assume), so the extra grunt will be even more worthwhile in the long run.

I have a 1070 and currently play at 1080p and it plays everything I've thrown at it, everything cranked up, at a rock solid 60fps.

I'm ordering a 27" 1440p monitor in the next week or so, my annual bonus gets paid in February's salary :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

So would a lesser card, that's the whole point.

My 480 plays every thing maxed out easily at 1080
Hairworks on everything on tw3 is the only thing I've found that causes fps to dip noticeably.
I've no idea what fps I run at though, as long as it's smooth I don't care.

Well RX 480 will give you 60 fps at 1080p most of the time if you use v-sync. If you don't use v-sync or have a 75+ Hz monitor a GTX 1070 would be much better.

You don't need to see every frame for it to have an effect on gameplay reaction times.

Using a 1070 on a 1080p 60hz screen and not everything is always a solid 60fps. Rise of the Tomb Raider for example has a few parts where I noticed the game was choppier, didn't have a frame counter running but it was visible. Most of the time though it was silky smooth :)

Going forward games will become more demanding so I'd say if the 1070 is within budget then get one and enjoy it, its a great card :)

1070 is todays 1080 card for maxing big games at ultra settings and good fps.yes it can play 1440 but its for 1080 and now.its the replacement for the old 1080 king the 970 gtx.1080 gtx is for 1440.

It is currently overkill, but it will max out games for longer, I believe in buying the best GPU you can afford, if you can spend the money on the 1070 then I say go for it, if not, go for the rx480 as it's 'more suited' to 1080p 60hz

Running 1070@1080p 144Hz G-Sync like a boss, but, there are a few titles already that I can't run constant>60fps with all the sliders@max(not that you need to but that's what a 1070's for imo).

It's down to the op's pocket, either 1060 6Gb or the faster 480 8Gb for a great gaming experience, or a 1070 for the ultimate gaming experience with all the bells and whistles on.
