A lot of that is marketing. Most non car folks I know believe they offer performance enhancements.

For example a former colleague of mine believed his 420i was quicker than my 328i because mine was an SE and his a M-Sport. No amount of explaining got through to him and he kept quoting the 0-60 time of the M4.

the number of people that think they drive a rocket because it has m-sport trim or s-line is crazy. Marketing is easy.

Only a V6 and bigger needs them really. A 4 pot only has one exhaust manifold
